Tottenham Hotspur Stadium: A Design That 'Democratized the Stadium Experience'

Populous' multifunctional design prioritizes fan experience.

1Innovative Stadium Design

Opened in 2019, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium goes beyond being just a football ground with its 62,850 capacity. Designed by Populous, it was planned as a multifunctional structure centered around fan experience. Built on the site of the former White Hart Lane, the stadium covers nearly twice the area.

2Design for NFL and Concerts

The stadium became the first venue outside the U.S. designed to host NFL games, made possible by a retractable pitch. The natural grass football field gives way to an artificial surface for American football and concerts. This design keeps the stadium attractive year-round.

3Acoustics and Atmosphere

Populous designed the seating layout like a concert arena. Working with Vanguardia, they created an acoustic environment that amplifies fan excitement. The seating angles were set at the steepest allowed (35 degrees), making spectators feel closer to the pitch.

4A Community Hub

The stadium was designed not just as a sports facility but also as a community center. The Market, a five-story glass atrium, features a 65-meter bar and a spacious dining area. It was planned as a social space accessible to all visitors, regardless of ticket price.

5Architectural Icon

The 17,500-capacity single-tier South Stand stands out as the largest in the UK. Glass facades and metal cladding give the stadium a modern look. A glass walkway allows visitors to walk above the pitch, adding to the unique experience.

6Lasting Impact

Populous' design director Christopher Lee says the stadium 'democratized the fan experience.' Traditionally, the best experiences were reserved for high-paying ticket holders, but this stadium offers quality for all. This philosophy has influenced stadium designs worldwide.
