MVRDV wins design competition for 'new world wonder' in Rotterdam
The Rotterdam Rocks! project will be a sustainable monument against climate crisis.
1Competition Winner
MVRDV has won a competition to design a €240 million landmark in Rotterdam. Named 'Rotterdam Rocks!', the project was selected as the most radical design among five finalists. The structure consists of seven giant rocks along the Maas river, featuring terraces, exhibition spaces, and green areas.
2Design Features
The winning project will span 30,000 square meters, housing exhibition spaces, a hotel, conference center, and dining areas. The facade includes special pockets for soil, water, plants, and animals, aiming to maintain ecological balance. The design maximizes both human and natural spaces.
3Jury's Perspective
The jury, including Zaha Hadid Foundation director Aric Chen and UNS founder Ben van Berkel, described MVRDV's design as 'remarkably bold'. They stated the project would capture visitors' imagination and raise awareness about sustainable living through its innovative approach.
4Ecological Vision
MVRDV founding partner Winy Maas explained the design aims to reduce CO2 emissions while creating inclusive spaces for people, plants, and animals. The project balances the need for new construction with ecological compensation, using porosity to maximize environmental value.
5District Development
The project will form part of the upcoming Waterkant district on the Maas river's south bank. The area will include over 3,500 homes, schools, a train station, offices, and cultural spaces. Rotterdam Rocks! is set to become the district's iconic landmark, blending architecture with nature.
6Sustainable Legacy
Rotterdam Rocks! is designed as a monument to inspire action against climate and biodiversity crises. Showcasing low-carbon innovations, the structure will encourage visitors to adopt sustainable lifestyles. Its bold statement aims to leave a lasting impact on both the city and its inhabitants.
