1The Power of GitLab Orbit

GitLab Orbit provides a live, queryable graph of your code, merge requests, pipelines, and deployments, keeping all relationships up-to-date. This enables developers to understand system interactions effortlessly. Complex questions like 'What could this change break?' are answered in seconds.

2Hackathon Participation

The GitLab Transcend Hackathon brought together 1,576 registered developers. Participants submitted 265 projects built on GitLab Orbit, covering AI agents, workflows, and skill sets. Additionally, 26 contributors merged 61 improvements into the Orbit codebase, adding language support and bug fixes.

3Common Problems and Solutions

A significant portion of hackathon projects focused on answering, 'What could this change break?' Seventy teams built tools to analyze the potential impact of merge requests. Other projects addressed codebase comprehension, incident root-cause analysis, and pipeline troubleshooting.

4Technological Implementation Winner: Sankofa

Sankofa offers context-aware solutions through three AI agents. Radar shows the blast radius of merge requests, Guide provides summaries for assigned issues, and Shield tracks security vulnerabilities. This project reduced vulnerability tracing from days to seconds by automating connections.

5Design and Usability Winner: Carver

Carver estimates the cost of legacy migrations using GitLab Orbit's dependency graph. It displays the number of units, duration, and risks involved. For example, migrating from AngularJS to Angular would take nine weeks, with untested critical services flagged in red to guide project managers.

6Potential Impact Winner: CrossCut

CrossCut runs only the tests a change could actually break, reducing CI runtime by up to 90%. When a merge request is opened, it identifies changed symbols and uses Orbit's call graph to determine the true impact. This eliminates unnecessary test executions, saving resources.

7Quality of the Idea Winner: Transcend

Transcend built a second reasoning engine on GitLab Orbit using semantic web technologies (OWL, SPARQL, RDF). This engine answers complex queries the native API cannot handle in a single call, such as identifying which knowledge-graph-embedding methods a codebase implements.

8Community Contributions

The hackathon wasn't just about building on Orbit; participants directly improved its codebase. They added language support, fixed bugs, and enhanced documentation. The community played a pivotal role in shaping Orbit's future.

9The Importance of Context

Hackathon projects highlighted developers' need for context. Orbit consolidated scattered data, enabling fast and controlled decision-making. Dozens of independent teams gravitating toward the same queries sent a strong signal to platform owners: context is where the real work happens.

10Outcome and Future

The GitLab Transcend Hackathon showcased how developers tackle real problems with creative solutions. Tools like Orbit push the boundaries of AI and automation while addressing the human need to understand systems. Such events will shape the future of software development practices.
