ADDI's octagonal aluminum pan design: An innovative approach for lifetime use

The STEKA pan designed for Japanese brand Mozambique offers durability and repairability.

1Challenging traditional design with form

ADDI Designstudio reimagined the conventional round pan shape as an octagon for Mozambique brand. This design prioritizes visual identity and kitchen visibility over casting efficiency and mass production. While the octagonal form offers no functional advantage, it encourages displaying the pan rather than storing it. The design merges Scandinavian minimalism with the Japanese brand's material-focused approach, creating a unique hybrid aesthetic.

2Durable materials and manufacturing process

The STEKA pan is cast from 5mm solid aluminum, providing cast-iron-like heat retention with lighter weight. Each pan is handcrafted at a Japanese foundry with over a century of casting experience, with production limited to just 10 units daily. The manufacturing combines gravity die casting, CNC machining, and hand-finishing techniques. This meticulous process ensures exceptional quality and attention to detail in every piece.

3Repairable design features

The pan incorporates repairable components for long-term use. Its handle attaches with a single stainless steel screw instead of permanent rivets, allowing removal for oven use or replacement. This modular approach enables individual part replacement rather than discarding the entire product. The uncoated aluminum surface develops character over time, with wear marks considered part of the product's evolving story rather than defects.

4Versatile cooking capabilities

STEKA functions equally well on stovetops and open fires. Its straight, high sides accommodate various cooking techniques from searing to simmering. The matching aluminum lid, inspired by Japanese otoshibuta drop-lids, features raised points that circulate moisture during cooking. This design supports a self-basting process, enhancing flavor development in braised dishes and sauces.

5Brand and chef collaboration

Mozambique partnered with Chef Kohei Horiuchi from nôtori, an auberge near Mount Fuji, to develop recipes showcasing STEKA's full capabilities. This collaboration provided valuable professional kitchen testing and refinement opportunities. The brand backs the product with a five-year warranty, reinforcing its commitment to long-term use. Such partnerships bridge the gap between design innovation and culinary practice.

6Sustainability and consumer behavior

STEKA presents an alternative to disposable consumer culture through its repairable design and durable materials. The uncoated surface encourages users to embrace the natural aging process, creating a personalized cooking companion. This approach fosters longer product relationships, challenging the notion of kitchenware as short-lived commodities. It sets new standards for sustainable kitchen products in the market.

7Balancing design and functionality

ADDI Designstudio strikes a careful balance between aesthetics and utility in the STEKA pan. While the octagonal form serves as a visual statement, material choices address practical cooking needs. The design team rethinks conventional kitchenware relationships, transforming how users interact with everyday objects. This thoughtful integration of form and function demonstrates how design can elevate mundane tools into meaningful possessions.

8Impact on kitchen culture

STEKA demonstrates how kitchen tools can transcend mere functionality to become objects of visual and emotional value. The design enables users to personalize their cooking spaces and form deeper connections with their utensils. The ADDI-Mozambique collaboration blends global design perspectives with local manufacturing expertise, creating a noteworthy example of cross-cultural design dialogue in functional objects.
