Disable These Gboard Settings to Protect Your Privacy
A guide to limiting Gboard data sharing for Android users.
1Gboard's Popularity and Privacy Concerns
As the default keyboard on Android devices with over 10 billion downloads, Gboard is widely used globally. However, it raises privacy concerns by logging user inputs and sending data to Google. The collection of sensitive data like device IDs and voice recordings particularly troubles users.
2Types of Collected Data and Risks
Gboard collects user device IDs, app activity, voice recordings, and performance data. Android Police reports indicate this data can be linked to user identities. While Google claims not to share data with third parties, users cannot delete their data, creating potential security vulnerabilities.
3Data Usage for AI Training
Google uses Gboard inputs through a process called federated learning to train AI models. This feature is enabled by default. Users' typed text and voice recordings are sent to Google's servers to improve AI development, raising concerns about personal data usage.
4Disabling Federated Learning
To prevent Gboard from collecting data for AI training, navigate to Language & input settings in Android. Open Gboard's privacy settings and select 'Delete learned words and data' to clear device data. This step will stop the federated learning process.
5Turning Off Voice and Usage Data
From the Privacy settings at the top of the keyboard, toggle off 'Audio donations' to prevent voice recordings from being sent. In the same menu, disable 'Usage statistics' and 'Improve for everyone' options to limit additional data sharing with Google.
6Alternative Keyboard Options
Privacy-focused users can consider offline, open-source alternatives like HeliBoard and FUTO. These keyboards don't collect user data but may lack some Gboard features. For those prioritizing data security, these alternatives provide safer typing experiences.
