US Treasury Blocks MEXC Global Over $16 Billion in Illicit Transactions
Operation Economic Outcast cuts off MEXC from US financial systems due to sanctions evasion.
1Sanctions Evasion Crackdown
The US Treasury has officially moved to sever the cryptocurrency exchange MEXC Global from the American financial system. This enforcement action, part of the broader Operation Economic Outcast, targets the platform for allegedly facilitating at least $16 billion in illicit transactions between May 2021 and May 2026, involving multiple sanctioned regimes.
2FinCEN Regulatory Order
FinCEN, the Treasury’s financial crimes unit, issued a formal order prohibiting US financial institutions from processing any transfers involving MEXC Global. This directive is set to take effect 30 days following its publication in the Federal Register. Violating these new requirements could expose institutions to significant civil or criminal legal liabilities.
3Russian Sanctions Violations
Investigations revealed nearly $1.5 billion in transactions linked to Russian sanctions evasion. This includes $232 million in direct transfers with entities sanctioned by the US, EU, and UK. Furthermore, the exchange continued processing transactions with platforms like Garantex and Grinex well into June 2026, long after initial sanctions were imposed against them.
4Iranian Regime Ties
The Treasury highlighted approximately $1 billion in direct transactions with over 40 Iranian crypto exchangers. Additionally, about $22 million was linked to the Central Bank of Iran and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, specifically the Quds Force. Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized that institutions cannot support the Iranian regime while maintaining US access.
5North Korean Cybercrime
The crackdown also addresses the role of digital assets in funding North Korean activities. Reports indicate that North Korean hackers stole over $6.7 billion since 2016, with $2 billion stolen in 2025 alone. These actors accounted for 76% of total crypto market losses in 2026, having already seized $577 million by April.
6Operational Scale and Assets
As of September 2026, MEXC was processing over $1 billion in daily transactions and held approximately $5 billion in reserves. Despite maintaining strict anti-money laundering policies on paper, the platform offered trading for over 3,000 different crypto assets, often ignoring jurisdictional restrictions and serving clients from regions explicitly prohibited by international sanctions.
7Broader Economic Outcast Campaign
Operation Economic Outcast, launched in August, serves as the primary mechanism for these enforcement actions. Beyond MEXC, the Treasury has sanctioned eight Canadian companies accused of facilitating the evasion of sanctions against Iran, Russia, and North Korea. This campaign represents a strategic effort to dismantle digital channels used for illicit financing.
8Future Regulatory Implications
This move signals a hardening stance against offshore exchanges that bypass US financial oversight. By cutting off access to the US banking system, regulators aim to isolate entities that provide lifelines to sanctioned states. As of the latest reports, MEXC had not provided a formal response to these serious allegations of systemic non-compliance.
