Ferrovalle Implements AI-Driven Smart Yard System at Mexico City Rail Hub
INFORM's optimization software to automate container handling and train loading processes.
1Major rail hub digitization
Ferrovalle, handling 550,000 TEUs annually at Mexico City's key intermodal terminal, is implementing INFORM's Syncrotess Optimization Plus to automate yard operations. The system will integrate with existing infrastructure rather than replace it, focusing on container storage planning, equipment deployment, and train loading processes. This Latin American inland hub currently relies heavily on manual processes and dispatcher judgment for critical operations.
2Four optimization modules
The Smart Yard deployment combines INFORM's Yard Optimizer, Crane Optimizer, Vehicle Optimizer, and Train Load Optimizer modules. Initial equipment coverage includes 8 RTG cranes, 4 reach stackers, and 14 terminal tractors. The system will provide real-time visibility for all assets (trains, railcars, containers, trucks) through automated data capture and AI-driven decision support, aiming to improve operational consistency and safety.
3Hybrid architecture approach
Unlike typical system replacements, Syncrotess Optimization Plus will layer over Ferrovalle's existing terminal operating system. It will exchange data including train consist information, load plans, container status, and operational updates while maintaining the current digital infrastructure. The solution must accommodate two operational areas (customs-cleared and customs-controlled yards) with different processes for maritime and cross-border containers.
4Automated customs integration
The system builds customs clearance directly into loading decisions - containers only get assigned for train loading after clearance confirmation from the in-house system. Automated weight checks during crane lifts eliminate separate weighing stops. Dedicated inspection areas will integrate into workflows through automated tractor assignments and status exchanges with the terminal operating system.
5Train load optimization
Currently manual train load planning will become automated, generating optimized plans based on container availability, train configurations, operational restrictions, and clearance status. Planners retain override capability to review and adjust proposed plans. The solution aims to increase equipment throughput and billable move ratio while meeting service-level targets for truck and train handling.
6Implementation timeline
Following the September 2026 contract signing, Ferrovalle and INFORM plan a June 2027 go-live date for the Smart Yard system. The nine-month implementation period reflects the complexity of integrating optimization layers with existing operations across multiple yard areas while maintaining uninterrupted freight movements through this critical Mexican rail hub.
7Strategic digital transformation
This project represents a strategic phase in Ferrovalle's digital evolution rather than infrastructure replacement. As described by INFORM's SVP, the challenge lies in connecting existing data sources with intelligent optimization while coordinating decisions across yard, equipment, and train operations - all without disrupting current systems handling substantial freight volumes.
8Industry implications
Ferrovalle's hybrid approach demonstrates how major rail operators can incrementally implement AI optimization without full system overhauls. The Mexico City hub's scale (processing over half a million TEUs annually) makes this a significant test case for AI-driven intermodal automation in Latin America, particularly for maintaining operational separation between different container workflows.
