Poland Expands A2 Motorway Between Lodz and Warsaw
Major expansion adds lanes to A2, enforcing 70 km/h speed limits during construction.
1Strategic A2 Expansion Project
Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak announced the expansion of the A2 motorway between Lodz and Warsaw. The project covers 89 kilometers of the 92-kilometer route. Plans include adding a third lane in each direction between Strykow and Grodzisk, and a fourth lane from Pruszkow toward Warsaw to accommodate rising traffic demands.
2Construction Timeline and Phases
The project is divided into four sections managed by contractors Strabag and Budimex. The first two segments are scheduled for completion by the end of 2027. The remaining sections are expected to be finished by the first quarter of 2028, ensuring a phased delivery of the expanded highway capacity for commuters.
3Traffic Management During Works
Construction will proceed while maintaining two lanes of traffic in each direction. To ensure safety, concrete separators will divide the active lanes from the construction zones. Contractors will utilize special connectors to maintain access to service areas and highway exits throughout the entire duration of the multi-year road improvement project.
4Strict Speed Control Measures
A 70 km/h speed limit will be enforced across the entire construction zone to protect workers. The government is implementing sectional speed measurement systems covering 30 and 48-kilometer stretches. Minister Klimczak stated that these controls are essential for traffic calming, drawing on previous successful experiences during the A1 motorway construction.
5Operational Logistics and Safety
Work involves closing the inner fast lanes and the central reservation area to build the additional lanes. Once these are completed, construction will shift to the southern carriageway, then the northern one. This alternating approach aims to minimize disruptions while ensuring that drivers always have two operational lanes available in each direction.
6Infrastructure Maintenance Requirements
Beyond lane expansion, the project includes the renovation of the Lodz Polnoc junction. This specific area will undergo a complete surface replacement, marking the first major upgrade since the junction opened 15 years ago. This maintenance is integrated into the broader construction schedule to streamline overall logistics and long-term road durability.
7High Traffic Volume Context
The A2 section between Lodz and Warsaw has become one of Poland's busiest routes over the last 13 years. Daily traffic counts currently range between 50,000 and 100,000 vehicles. Authorities expect this volume to increase significantly, necessitating the expansion to support future connectivity, including access to the planned Centralny Port Komunikacyjny.
8Long-term Impact and Significance
This expansion represents a critical investment in Poland's primary transport artery. By increasing capacity and integrating modern traffic management, the government aims to reduce congestion and improve safety on a vital economic corridor. The project serves as a key component in preparing the national road network for future regional growth and connectivity.
