Split-Level Timber House Integrates with Japanese Forest

Morimado House makes nature an integral part of daily life.

1Design Philosophy of Morimado House

Morimado House is located on the edge of a dense forest in Hokkaido, Japan. The architecture aims to integrate the forest not just as a backdrop but as an essential part of daily life. Carefully positioned openings highlight seasonal changes, bringing nature actively into the home.

2Split-Level Interior Layout

The house is organized with split-level spaces that connect different functions. A double-height living room, a window seat overlooking the forest, and interconnected levels encourage family communication. This layout offers various spaces to spend time according to mood and activity.

3Role of Natural Light

Natural light plays a central role in the design. Large openings facing the forest, high-level windows, and voids bring daylight deep into the house. This creates constantly changing patterns of light and shadow, making the atmosphere dynamic.

4Timber Structure and Minimal Materials

The house features a timber structure and a highly insulated envelope suited to Hokkaido's harsh climate. Simple materials like natural wood, white walls, and exposed concrete flooring create a calm backdrop that emphasizes the forest's colors and textures throughout the year.

5Balance of Privacy and Openness

The architecture offers openness toward the surrounding landscape while limiting exposure to neighboring houses. This balanced approach maintains both a connection to nature and privacy in living spaces.

6Forest Window and Transitions

The ‘Forest Window’ design element integrates seasonal changes into daily life. Arched openings provide smooth transitions between rooms and frame the forest view, enhancing the connection with nature.

7Flow of Living Spaces

Living, dining, and terrace areas flow seamlessly toward the surrounding forest. The open staircase connects each level while framing views of the forest from within the house, creating a continuous living space.

8Life Integrated with Nature

Morimado House creates an environment where daily life and seasonal changes come together. This design emphasizes harmony between humans and nature, offering a sustainable lifestyle deeply connected to the natural world.
