Studiotools HighLow Chair Transforms Backrest for Standing Meeting Support
A versatile chair design that pivots its backrest to accommodate standing work environments.
1Bridging Sitting and Standing
Studiotools addresses the common limitation where height-adjustable tables encourage standing, but traditional chairs remain static. The HighLow Chair features a backrest that tips forward to function as a leaning support. This design allows users to transition between sitting and standing postures without needing to move or store a second piece.
2Mechanical Design and Engineering
The chair utilizes a slender black tubular-steel frame and lacks restrictive armrests to facilitate movement. Inside the cylindrical backrest, a plywood core features two distinct angled faces. Studiotools engineered an in-house joint milled from tool steel, incorporating damping to prevent rattling during the transition between sitting and leaning support positions.
3Material and Foam Integration
The chair employs four different foam densities to ensure comfort across various postures. The seat incorporates webbing beneath the upholstery to provide spring-like support beyond foam alone. The backrest uses firmer foam for the leaning surface and softer foam for traditional support, ensuring the material adapts to the specific physical requirements.
4Aesthetic and Upholstery Choices
Designer Moritz Willm opted for Camira’s Yoredale bouclé fabric, available in 33 distinct colors ranging from neutrals to vibrant tones. This wool-rich blend features black yarn woven throughout, which visually complements the steel frame. The rounded forms and colorful options give the furniture a playful, stool-like character rather than a clinical appearance.
5Mobility and Spatial Efficiency
Equipped with small casters, the chair is designed for high mobility in dynamic meeting spaces. The casters include brakes to prevent unwanted rolling when the user leans against the backrest. Furthermore, the design supports stacking between two to four units, allowing for efficient storage when floor space is required for group activities.
6Operational Context for Use
The HighLow Chair is specifically optimized for collaborative environments where participants frequently stand or turn to face colleagues. It is less effective in traditional, rigid settings like fixed-row lecture halls. The chair’s utility depends on the room layout, as it requires a flexible environment to fully leverage its unique leaning support mechanism.
7Ergonomic Limitations and Intent
While the chair offers multiple ways to sit, Studiotools does not claim it provides all-day comfort. The design focuses on supporting varied postures during shorter, active sessions rather than long-term sedentary work. It serves as a tool for transition, acknowledging that having several sitting options is distinct from finding one perfect fit.
8Impact on Meeting Dynamics
By integrating a leaning support directly into the chair, Studiotools removes the friction of clearing furniture during standing workshops. This design choice reflects a shift toward agile office layouts where equipment must adapt to the flow of discussion. It effectively turns a standard office chair into a functional, space-saving tool for collaboration.
