A Barn-Inspired Treehouse Retreat in the Italian Alps
Studio Officina82's TreeBOX reimagines traditional architecture for modern escapes.
1From Grain Barns to Contemporary Retreat
TreeBOX draws inspiration from 'barchi', traditional movable-roof hay barns native to Garessio in Italy's Ligurian-Piedmont Alps. Studio Officina82 transformed this ingenious rural engineering solution into modern architecture. The project forms part of Selucente, a larger hospitality initiative aimed at revitalizing the alpine hamlet of Alpisella. By adapting vernacular architecture, the designers created a space that respects local traditions while meeting contemporary needs.
2Architecture That Disappears Into Nature
Perched on slender wooden posts amidst oak trees, TreeBOX's faceted form rises through the branches. Timber shingles wrapping the entire structure create an almost organic appearance from a distance. The cabin's ability to blend with its surroundings while maintaining architectural integrity demonstrates a rare balance. Studio Officina82 achieves what many attempt but few accomplish - creating built environments that feel like natural extensions of their settings.
3Interior Minimalism Meets Vertical Grandeur
Inside TreeBOX, restraint defines the space. Pale plywood walls celebrate material honesty, while the vertical drop of over four meters transforms spatial constraints into atmospheric quality. The glazed sleeping area features a king-size bed facing uninterrupted forest and mountain views through floor-to-ceiling windows. This design dissolves boundaries between interior and exterior, making nature an integral part of the living experience.
4The Rope Net: Whimsy Meets Sophistication
Suspended beneath a skylight, the rope net serves no practical purpose yet becomes one of TreeBOX's most memorable features. This playful element invites guests to lounge in afternoon light filtering through the canopy, evoking childhood treehouse fantasies in a decidedly adult setting. Such details demonstrate how the project transcends mere functionality to create emotional connections with its users.
5A Cabin That Changes With the Hours
TreeBOX transforms character throughout the day. Mornings find guests sipping coffee at the simple bistro set on the balcony, immersed in forest rhythms. At night, the illuminated 'TreeBOX' carving above the doorway becomes visible from the path below - more noticeable in darkness than daylight, creating intentional poetic contrast. These temporal transformations make each visit unique.
6Contextual Design Philosophy
Studio Officina82's approach respects local architectural heritage without imitation. The wooden shingles, slender posts, and orientation all reference regional grain barns, but reinterpret their underlying principles of rationality and contextuality. Every design decision - from materials to spatial organization - traces back to the site's history and environment, challenging architecture's frequent disregard for locality.
7A Model for Sustainable Tourism
As part of the Selucente initiative, TreeBOX presents a sustainable tourism model. The project revitalizes Alpisella village while preserving natural and architectural heritage. Unlike boutique retreats that use nature as mere backdrop, TreeBOX integrates landscape, architecture and design to support regional development. This holistic approach demonstrates how tourism can celebrate rather than exploit local resources.
8Beyond Novelty in Architectural Design
TreeBOX represents a paradigm shift in architectural thinking. Rather than pursuing novelty, Studio Officina82 recognized the inherent perfection in traditional 'barchi' barns and translated their intelligence into contemporary terms. The project proves that vernacular architecture often holds solutions modern designers overlook. TreeBOX stands as both timely and timeless - a rare achievement suggesting that in design, 'new' doesn't always mean 'better'.
