Fala Atelier Completes Geometric House Around a Column in Porto

A compact 120-square-meter residence transforms urban constraints into a playful, sculptural architectural composition.

1Navigating Constrained Urban Footprints

Fala Atelier designed the House Around a Column on a tight 60-square-meter site in Porto. Facing an irregular plot, the architects rejected conventional rectangular layouts. Instead, they utilized the longest wall as a primary reference point, establishing a rigorous geometric logic that organizes the interior space while maximizing the limited horizontal footprint.

2Verticality as a Spatial Strategy

The residence spans 120 square meters across multiple levels, emphasizing vertical movement to compensate for restricted floor area. A continuous circulation route connects these levels, creating a sense of openness. By integrating a double-height void and angular ceiling openings, the design achieves a complex, airy interior despite the building's compact and dense urban surroundings.

3Geometric Columns and Interior Logic

Three distinct columns—circular, hexagonal, and square—punctuate the vertical arrangement, introducing varied geometries into the composition. The main living area on the first floor features a triangular kitchen and striped flooring. These elements, combined with sculptural furniture and unusual handrails, demonstrate a precise spatial logic that reconciles diverse forms within a small area.

4Manipulating Scale Through Facades

The street-facing facade utilizes black-and-white marble stripes to create a graphic, deliberate composition. An oversized window visually merges two floors into a single figure, effectively concealing the internal level divisions. This manipulation of scale and perception gives the compact residence a distinctive, bold presence within the dense, historic urban fabric of Porto.

5Playful Functional Architectural Elements

Architectural mischief is introduced through colorful, abstract shapes that serve functional purposes. A pink circle acts as a handle, a yellow triangle functions as a handrail, and a green square serves as a shutter. These whimsical details transform standard building components into an engaging, artistic dialogue that contrasts with the house's restrained geometric base.

6Rear Elevation and Graphic Rhythm

The narrow rear facade mirrors the graphic logic of the front, featuring two windows positioned beneath a striped cornice. A hovering semicircular handrail adds a final touch of character, giving the elevation a face-like appearance. This consistent application of calculated geometries ensures the house remains visually cohesive from both the street and the rear.

7Circulation and Spatial Connections

Two staircases with distinct characters facilitate movement throughout the residence, leading eventually to the rooftop. These staircases act as sculptural elements that reinforce the house's vertical orientation. By carefully positioning these paths, the architects established a sequence of spatial connections that makes the interior feel significantly larger than its modest physical footprint suggests.

8Precision Within Playful Design

The House Around a Column serves as a case study in balancing architectural precision with a sense of playfulness. By embracing the constraints of an irregular plot, Fala Atelier created a residence that is both functional and visually surprising. The project proves that small-scale urban housing can achieve architectural significance through thoughtful, deliberate design choices.
