How to Add a Second User Profile to a Googlebook
Securely share your device by creating distinct user profiles for family or guests.
1Multi-User Profile Capabilities
Googlebooks support multiple user profiles, including specific options for children and temporary guest access. This architecture prevents other users from rearranging your desktop or accessing personal files. While all users can perform app updates, only those with administrative privileges possess the authority to modify system settings or manage existing user profiles.
2Initiating the Setup Process
To add a new profile, you must first sign out of your current session. Use the power button or the fingerprint sensor on your keyboard to access the lock screen. If using an external monitor, click the battery icon in the status bar and select the power icon from the Quick Settings menu.
3Configuring Secondary User Accounts
Once on the login page, select the Add user button to begin the configuration. You can sign in with a Google account or skip this step entirely. Note that profiles without a Google login cannot access the Play Store, perform cloud backups, or utilize advanced features like Gemini or the integrated screenshot tool.
4Managing Settings via System Tab
If the add user option is missing, navigate to the System tab within your Googlebook settings. Select Users to toggle the Add users from the sign-in screen feature. This menu also serves as the central hub for deleting profiles or modifying default behaviors regarding guest mode and administrative access rights.
5Setting Up Child Profiles
During the Add user flow, select the For my child option to initiate parental controls. You must provide the child's name, birthday, and gender. This process requires linking both a parent and child Google account. You can manage these specific parental restrictions through a web browser or the dedicated Family Link mobile application.
6Utilizing Temporary Guest Mode
Guest mode is enabled by default and provides a temporary environment without persistent file storage. Access this by signing out and selecting Guest mode on the login screen. If the button is missing, enable it in the System settings under the Users tab. Guest sessions are ideal for quick, non-permanent device sharing.
7Exiting Guest Mode Sessions
Exiting a guest session differs from standard profile sign-outs. Pressing the power button will not trigger the lock screen. Instead, you must click the notification bell icon located in the status bar and select Exit Guest mode. This action immediately clears all temporary data associated with that specific browsing session.
8Security and Platform Considerations
Always assign secure passwords or PINs to each profile to ensure data privacy. If you are migrating from a standard Chromebook, verify your parental control configurations in Family Link, as settings may not align perfectly between platforms. Proper profile management effectively transforms your Googlebook into a secure, multi-user desktop computer for households.
