Sustainable Community Hub Opens in Feltham
Timber conical roofs define this low-carbon footprint building designed for public use.
1Community-Driven Project
Feltham Green Cabin was commissioned by the local volunteer group Friends of Feltham Green, who have long campaigned to improve this historically underserved area of West London. Supported by the London Borough of Hounslow, the project represents five years of grassroots effort. The structure revitalizes an underused stretch of High Street while preserving the adjacent green space.
2Architectural Identity: Conical Roofs
The building's most distinctive feature is its three timber conical roofs of varying heights. This design gives civic presence to the modest 21 sqm structure. The tallest cone shelters the vaulted, light-filled main community space. Gabion walls, created in collaboration with local artists, incorporate salvaged materials donated by residents.
3Biodiversity and Sustainability
The gabion walls double as a 'bug hotel', integrating biodiversity into the building's fabric from the outset. Lightweight FSC-certified poplar plywood cladding echoes the bark of the area's plane trees. Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery, solar panels, and rainwater harvesting make this a net zero operational building.
4Eco-Conscious Material Choices
Working with structural engineers Allt Environmental, the team eliminated concrete and steel entirely, using compacted rubble foundations and an all-timber superstructure. Continuous external insulation enhances energy efficiency. Salvaged materials donated by local residents strengthen community ownership of the project.
5Flexible and Inclusive Design
The open, transparent frontage allows passersby to view activities inside, animating a part of the town center that needed revitalization. The interior is flexibly designed to accommodate everything from gardening workshops to art classes and public meetings, serving diverse community needs.
6Community-Integrated Process
The project was designed from inception to belong to its community through construction, materials, and daily use. Wall designs created with local artists Susie John and Bill Fuller lend a sense of grounded permanence. The cabin is now operational for use by Friends of Feltham Green and the wider community.
7Prioritizing Environmental Performance
The mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery maximizes energy efficiency. Solar panels with battery storage meet the building's energy needs, while rainwater harvesting provides irrigation water. These features make the cabin net zero in operational energy use, setting a benchmark for sustainable design.
8A Model for Sustainable Architecture
Feltham Green Cabin successfully blends low-carbon design with community engagement. It creates a model for improving quality of life in underserved areas while implementing sustainable building techniques. The project demonstrates how local materials and community participation can be integrated into architecture effectively.
