Apple to End Rosetta Support for Intel-Based macOS Apps

Developers must complete Apple silicon compatibility updates by fall 2024.

1Phasing Out Rosetta

Apple is gradually removing the Rosetta translation layer introduced in 2020. Starting with macOS 26.4, users will receive update notifications when launching Intel-based apps. With macOS 27, Rosetta support will end completely, making Intel apps incompatible with Apple silicon Macs. Limited exceptions will remain for unmaintained legacy games and specialized applications relying on Intel frameworks.

2Critical Deadlines for Developers

Announced at WWDC 2023, these changes will take effect with macOS 26.4 in mid-2024. Rosetta will be completely discontinued upon macOS 27's release this fall. Developers have approximately six months to transition their apps to Apple silicon. Apple provides migration guidance through developer forums and documentation to facilitate this process.

3Universal Binary Requirement

Apple requires developers to create universal binaries supporting both Intel and Apple silicon architectures. This dual-architecture approach ensures seamless user experience across all Macs. Developers can use standard build tools in Xcode to create these binaries. Apple recommends leveraging Metal and Core ML technologies for optimal performance on Apple silicon.

4User Experience Implications

From macOS 26.4 onward, users will receive update notifications each time they launch Intel-based apps. This may disrupt workflows, especially in enterprise environments. Developers should proactively notify users to upgrade to native versions. Failure to update will render apps completely unusable when macOS 27 launches later this year.

5Exceptions for Legacy Software

Apple will maintain limited Rosetta support for unmaintained games and specialized applications dependent on specific frameworks. This exception primarily benefits retro gaming communities. However, commercial applications must transition to native versions. Developers should prioritize native migration for long-term sustainability.

6Migration Best Practices

Apple provides comprehensive migration guides for developers. Xcode 15 introduces new tools for performance analysis and debugging. Metal APIs and Core ML integrations are particularly crucial for graphics-intensive applications. Developers should test their apps on both Intel and Apple silicon devices throughout the transition process.

7Enterprise Impact and Adaptation

Large organizations must allocate additional resources to transition hundreds of custom applications. Legacy apps in finance and engineering sectors may incur significant migration costs. IT teams should plan for user training and pilot deployments. Apple's Enterprise Developer Program offers critical support during this transition period.

8Apple's Architectural Commitment

This move represents the final step in Apple's strategy to create a fully independent ecosystem from Intel. The transition that began with M1 and M2 chips is now completing at the software level. This change aligns with Mac's long-term performance and energy efficiency goals. Developer adaptation to this new paradigm is crucial for the Mac ecosystem's continuity.
