Architectural Harmony in Slovakia: House by the Vineyard Project
Contemporary residential architecture balances rural context and natural landscape in western Slovakia.
1Contextual Residential Footprint
House by the Vineyard is a bespoke residential project completed in 2024 by ARCHITEKTI mikulaj and mikulajova. Spanning 306 square meters, the single-family home sits on the rural edge of a traditional wine village in western Slovakia, directly bordering open vineyards and an adjacent natural forest line.
2Architectural Leadership and Collaboration
Lead architects Juraj Mikulaj and Andrea Ambrovicova Mikulajova directed the comprehensive spatial planning alongside design collaborator Jana Machalova. Structural engineering was calculated by Ing. Frantisek Hladky, while Atelier DIVO orchestrated the surrounding landscape architecture to seamlessly blend domestic boundaries with the agricultural Slovakian terrain.
3Tactile Material Hierarchy
The construction deploys a restrained structural palette dominated by exposed concrete, traditional brickwork, and warm timber elements. This material trio establishes durable exterior envelopes while generating textural interior transitions. The architectural envelope reflects regional agrarian masonry typologies while maintaining a distinctly contemporary spatial logic.
4Landscape and Edge Boundaries
Positioned at the literal transition between cultivated vineyards and dense forest, the building navigates complex boundary conditions. Atelier DIVO designed the exterior grounds to preserve rural sightlines. Strategic glazing frames the viticultural topography, ensuring the residential volume remains grounded within western Slovakia's protected landscape.
5Interior Craft and Furnishings
The residential interior architecture emphasizes spatial continuity through customized joinery and tactile materials. Curated furnishings, including select pieces manufactured by TON, complement the structural timber surfaces. The interior layouts prioritize cross-ventilation and diffused natural daylight, organizing private domestic zones around functional communal living spaces.
6Structural and Environmental Integration
Engineered by Ing. Frantisek Hladky, the structural concrete and masonry framework delivers robust thermal mass performance for continental climate shifts. The massing shields living zones from harsh northern winds while optimizing southern solar exposure across the vineyard slopes, minimizing active energy demands throughout seasonal cycles.
7Documentation and Visual Narrative
Architectural photographer Matej Hakar documented the completed structure, capturing the dialogue between raw structural surfaces and changing agricultural light. The photographic study highlights the tactile junctions where cast concrete meets crafted timber, underscoring the studio's commitment to tectonic precision and understated regional modernism.
8Regional Contemporary Vernacular
House by the Vineyard exemplifies how Central European practices negotiate rural suburbanization without resorting to historicism. By integrating honest construction materials, precise structural engineering, and responsive landscape planning, the project establishes a sustainable architectural benchmark for residential development within historic viticultural settlements.
