Estudio Zero Designs Sound Wave-Inspired Co-Living Complex in Mexico

A pink-toned concrete building blends architecture with the concept of amplitude.

1Sound Wave Inspiration

Estudio Zero designed Amplitude Coliving, a 390-square-meter complex in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, inspired by the physical shape of sound waves. The arches and columns of the facade mimic waveforms, symbolizing energy’s movement and growth. The studio aimed to translate the client’s vision of amplitude into architectural form, creating a shared language between client and designer.

2Community-Focused Design

The complex features courtyards, open-air corridors, and interconnected common areas to foster social interaction. A central courtyard with a pool, shared kitchen, and dining area serves as the social heart. The design encourages spontaneous encounters, allowing residents to connect naturally while sharing spaces in this co-living model.

3Architectural Details

The building includes three apartment types: studios, units with private gardens, and double-height lofts. Open-air balconies with scalloped railings line the courtyard, transitioning to residential spaces. The color palette, tied to the coastal landscape, features terracotta-pink stucco, board-formed concrete, and tropical hardwood accents.

4Sustainable Features

The design incorporates thermal mass from concrete and stucco to moderate temperature swings, while shaded corridors and deep overhangs promote airflow. Solar panels paired with battery storage ensure energy resilience during tropical weather events. These features align with the studio’s focus on sustainability and climate responsiveness.

5Material Contrasts

Warm, natural materials like pink-toned concrete and stucco contrast with glass blocks, steel spiral staircases, and cable railings. The hourglass-shaped concrete columns echo the waveform concept, reinforcing the building’s dynamic, motion-inspired design. These details create a cohesive architectural language.

6Regional Context

The project draws inspiration from Oaxaca’s coastal landscape, blending local materials and traditional techniques. Similar pink-toned projects in Mexico include V Taller’s Tulum complex and Reyes Rios + Larrain’s beach housing. This regional approach highlights the studio’s commitment to contextual design.

7Client Collaboration

Estudio Zero worked closely with the client to embody the concept of amplitude, extending beyond form to a shared philosophy. The design reflects the client’s energy and vision, transforming abstract ideas into tangible architectural elements. This collaboration ensured the project’s alignment with the client’s values.

8Impact on Co-Living

Amplitude Coliving redefines co-living spaces by prioritizing community interaction and architectural innovation. The design’s focus on shared spaces and natural connections sets a benchmark for future co-living projects. It demonstrates how architecture can enhance social dynamics while staying true to its conceptual roots.
