1Rapid Market Share Shift

Anthropic’s Claude captured 29.4% of UK consumer spending on AI subscriptions by July, a sharp rise from 7.4% in December 2025. During this same seven-month period, ChatGPT’s dominance in spending declined from 73.5% to 52.5%. These figures highlight a shifting landscape in the competitive generative AI consumer market.

2Data Methodology and Scope

The findings originate from a study titled Who Pays for AI?, authored by economists from the University of Warwick and Imperial Business School. Researchers analyzed de-identified transaction records from 14.2 million UK bank accounts. The study focuses exclusively on individual consumer subscriptions, deliberately excluding corporate licenses purchased by employers for staff.

3Spending and User Adoption

UK adults currently spend approximately £1.07 billion annually on AI assistants based on July rates. As of June, 5.1% of the adult population, roughly 2.8 million people, paid for these services. This represents a significant increase from the 2.3% adoption rate recorded just one year earlier, indicating rapid mainstream consumer integration.

4Pricing Strategy Differences

Claude’s growth is partly attributed to its pricing structure. Approximately 6.2% of Claude subscribers opt for premium plans costing £80 or more monthly. In contrast, only 0.3% of ChatGPT subscribers choose equivalent high-tier plans. While Claude captures more spending, ChatGPT maintains a larger base, holding 71.2% of active assistant subscribers.

5Demographics of AI Payers

AI subscription payers in the UK skew toward younger, urban, and higher-income males. Adults in their 20s are nearly five times more likely to pay for AI tools than those over 60. By occupation, IT professionals lead adoption at 20.3%, while social care workers represent the lowest segment at only 1.7%.

6Regional and Gender Trends

Geographic and gender disparities remain evident in the adoption of AI services. London reports the highest concentration of paying users, whereas the North East has the lowest. Additionally, men are 27% more likely to pay for AI subscriptions than women, a trend that persists even after adjusting for income and regional factors.

7Corporate IPO Preparations

The study arrives as both Anthropic and OpenAI prepare for potential public offerings. Anthropic’s amended IPO filing reveals $17 billion in revenue, while OpenAI president Greg Brockman indicated his company aims for an IPO by 2027. Both firms are currently focused on scaling user bases and proving long-term financial viability to investors.

8Market Outlook and Context

Despite Claude’s rapid gains, ChatGPT continues to dominate with over half of consumer AI spending and nearly 75% of paying subscribers. OpenAI recently reported 1.2 billion weekly users, up from 1 billion just two months prior. The market remains highly dynamic as companies refine their tools and compete for premium consumer segments.
