A Zen-Inspired Urban Retreat: Hosono House in San Francisco

This architectural masterpiece offers a nature-infused sanctuary away from city chaos.

1An Urban Sanctuary

Located in San Francisco's Bernal Heights neighborhood, Hosono House was completely redesigned by Ryan Leidner Architecture. Its secluded position offers privacy despite the urban setting, while a pedestrian bridge and sunken courtyard design create intentional separation from the city fabric. The bridge leading to the new entrance welcomes visitors with an almost ceremonial procession.

2Layered Spatial Composition

The home's interior layout underwent radical reorganization. The entrance sits at a half-level landing, with bedrooms consolidated downstairs. The main living area was moved to the top floor to maximize city views. High ceilings and an open plan make this floor remarkably airy and fluid.

3Natural Light and Material Harmony

Large openings, clerestory windows, and a skylight above the staircase pull daylight deep into the plan. The restrained palette of white surfaces and pale wood is enlivened by ferns and trailing plants in the living area. A circular pivot window introduces playful contrast to the rectilinear composition.

4Interiors with Cultural References

An eclectic collection of vintage furniture reflects the owners' interest in international design, ranging from 1960-70s Italian pieces to Japanese and California modernism. Notable items include Guido Faleschini's Tucroma chairs, Gae Aulenti's Locus Solus chairs, and a custom dining table by local artisan Nobuto Suga.

5Tokyo-Inspired Lounge

The lower level features a wide-plank white oak lounge opening onto the sunken courtyard, inspired by Tokyo whisky bars. A generous velvet daybed and record-playing station give this area distinctive character. Tactile finishes like hemp plaster in the guest room and Venetian plaster in the primary bath enhance the sensory experience.

6Zen Courtyard

Designed by Stephens Design Studio, the courtyard embodies the project's essence. Situated below street level with irregular stone pavers, boulders, creeping groundcover and ferns, it evokes a distinctly Japanese Zen garden atmosphere, offering meditative tranquility in the heart of the city.

7Material Craftsmanship

The exterior is clad in charcoal-stained cedar siding. Inside, preserved and refinished historic beams add character. The design team successfully created a warm, inviting atmosphere by highlighting the textures of natural materials throughout.

8Reimagining Urban Architecture

Hosono House stands as an exemplary response to the quest for privacy and tranquility within dense urban fabric. This home, where architecture, landscape and interior design seamlessly integrate, proposes an alternative living model for modern city life. It proves that nature-harmonious living spaces can be created even in San Francisco's challenging topography.
