ASML Warns Lithography Tool Supply Will Lag Surging AI Demand Through 2028

Record earnings highlight structural equipment deficits as chipmakers extend advance orders toward 2030.

1Record Quarter Meets Structural Deficit

ASML reported record third-quarter 2026 net sales of €11.7 billion and €5.0 billion in net income, delivering 113 new lithography systems. Despite strong performance at the high end of guidance, the company officially warned that planned equipment supply will fail to satisfy customer demand through 2027 and 2028.

2Long-Term Booking Horizons Accelerate

Chipmakers are rapidly shifting order commitments past 2027 as they construct new semiconductor fabs. CEO Christophe Fouquet noted that order book momentum continues expanding, with major clients actively seeking delivery slots for 2029 and 2030. Customers expect their own production capacity will remain constrained until at least 2028.

3Capacity Expansion Plans Under Review

ASML previously planned a 30% capacity increase for 2027 and another 30% for 2028 across low-NA EUV and DUV immersion tools. Management now acknowledges that compounding 30% annual additions will still fall short. Consequently, the company is actively investigating options to expand manufacturing output beyond those targets.

4Installed Base Upgrades Bridge Gaps

Installed base management revenue reached €3.29 billion, exceeding guidance by €400 million as chipmakers maximized existing equipment footprints. The upcoming NXE:3800F upgrade will boost throughput from 230 to 260 wafers per hour starting in 2027, while new immersion tools are scheduled to achieve 330 wafers per hour.

5High NA Adoption Timelines Diverge

Leading foundries are pursuing distinct schedules for next-generation High-NA EUV manufacturing. Samsung plans high-volume production beginning in 2028, while Intel continues running systems across increasing layers. TSMC confirmed High-NA mass production around 2030 and requested ASML lead a multi-client consortium to develop a 12-inch reticle.

6Financial Guidance Raised Amid Volatility

Following the third-quarter results, ASML raised the low end of its full-year 2026 sales guidance to between €44 billion and €45 billion. Fourth-quarter guidance targets net sales between €14.2 billion and €15.2 billion, maintaining gross margins near 57% as completed customer pricing adjustments take effect.

7Physical Equipment Validates AI Capex

While macroeconomic analysts and the IMF warn of circular financing risks across artificial intelligence markets, ASML's multi-year backlog represents binding hardware commitments. Because advanced lithography systems require over a year from order to delivery, signed tool contracts serve as hard evidence of verified semiconductor capital deployment.

8Long-Term Supply Chain Horizons

To handle relentless demand, ASML is constructing a second Dutch campus, with the initial phase scheduled for completion in 2029. Meanwhile, metrology tools like the YieldStar 550B are prepared for advanced 14-angstrom logic nodes, securing the technological roadmap as order horizons firmly stretch into the next decade.
