GO'C Designs Multi-Purpose Artist Building on Washington Island
The building serves as both a gallery and living space, showcasing local craftsmanship.
1Project Purpose
GO'C architecture studio designed a multi-purpose building for artists on Orcas Island, Washington. The building functions as both a gallery and a living space for artists. The project was initiated by the newly established Iolair Foundation, which aims to invite artists from around the world to find inspiration on the island.
2Architectural Details
The building spans 1,600 square feet and features an L-shaped design. Exterior walls are clad in ebony-stained cedar planks. The roofline emphasizes the transition between public and private spaces. Inside, the building includes a gallery, studio, and living quarters. A large circular window brings natural light deep into the space.
3Local Craftsmanship
The project was enriched by contributions from local artists. A galvanized steel gate and a large stone sculpture add to the building's identity. These pieces connect the building to the island's creative community. GO'C merged local craftsmanship with architecture to create a unique experience.
4Location and Environment
The building was constructed on a former apple orchard. Its location acts as a bridge between a residential neighborhood and a commercial corridor. Surrounding the building is a spacious courtyard, which serves as an exhibition area for art installations and sculptures.
5Future Plans
GO'C plans to build a second structure on the eastern half of the site. This building will further define and activate the courtyard. Together, the two buildings will form a harmonious low-rise complex that respects the island's urban fabric.
6Foundation Formation
The Iolair Foundation took shape during the planning and construction of the project. Architecture played a catalytic role in the foundation's creation. The project realized a long-held vision of supporting artists, embodying the foundation's mission.
7Other Projects
GO'C has completed various projects, including a houseboat in Seattle and a residence designed for a family of eight. These projects reflect the studio's minimalist and functional design approach, often highlighting local materials and craftsmanship.
8Project Significance
This building symbolizes the fusion of art and architecture. Enriched by contributions from the local community, it offers an inspiring environment for artists. GO'C combined art and architecture with the island's spirit, creating a reference point for future artists.
