iOS 27's AI Photo Editing Tools Put to the Test
How Apple's new AI features transform your photos
1iOS 27's AI Photo Revolution
Apple's iOS 27 update introduced new AI-powered editing tools like Reframe and Extend to the Photos app. Reframe allows users to change the angle and composition of their photos, while Extend can expand image edges. These tools work particularly well with photos taken on newer devices like the iPhone 17 Pro Max. However, AI hallucinations can sometimes create issues in certain situations.
2Changing Composition with Reframe
The Reframe tool analyzes objects in photos to make perspective changes. In a test with Beirut's corniche, the railing perspective was successfully altered and the rocky shore correctly generated. However, details like trash cans and streetlights were misplaced. In a latte photo overlooking Byblos, ice cube texture was perfectly preserved while the distant background looked artificial.
3Failures with Plane and Ferris Wheel
One of Reframe's biggest failures was its inability to properly recognize a regular airplane. The first edit bent the aircraft, while the second added irrelevant components. Similarly, a sunset Ferris wheel photo lost its circular form in the first edit, with missing cabins. The second attempt partially fixed the shape but gondolas remained missing.
4Lavender Shrub and Dandelion Tests
The first Reframe edit of a mountain lavender shrub enhanced colors and clarified the background. But the second attempt ruined the shot with obvious AI hallucinations and pattern repetition. In a dandelion-blowing selfie, the stem structure wasn't maintained and facial features appeared aged. The second edit further distorted the face but accurately generated the lake surface.
5Photo Expansion with Extend
The Extend tool expands cropped photo edges by generating missing parts. In a Tripoli Port lifebuoy test, the tool failed to recognize the object and focused on the left edge. Conversely, in a dim car interior photo, it successfully extended the infotainment display and side mirrors. Close-up cement boulders had their patterns correctly predicted.
6Lighthouse and Cityscape Results
When extending a cropped lighthouse's bottom section, the AI perfectly replicated colors and cloud patterns. The second extension created a realistic sea but also hallucinated an extra-large second lighthouse. Attempting to extend buildings on Jounieh's hillside resulted in generic structures being added to both sides, with made-up cars on an imaginary road.
7AI's Creativity and Limitations
Tests show iOS 27's AI photo tools can produce impressive results in some cases but fail with complex objects like planes and Ferris wheels. The tools perform better with simple textures and patterns. Apple's AI model still has limitations in understanding basic object structures, leading to unwanted outcomes in creative edits.
8What It Means for Users
iOS 27's new AI editing tools offer fun and easy perspective changes for average users but aren't yet reliable for professional photographers. Apple is expected to improve these tools in future updates. For now, users should carefully check AI-generated results, especially in complex scenes. This technology marks the beginning of a new era in mobile photography.
