Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Ultra Camera Comparison

We took 1,000 photos to test the cameras of foldable phones

1Introduction

Samsung is one of the brands producing the best camera phones in the North American market. With the launch of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra, I decided to test their cameras. I took 1,000 photos to thoroughly examine the performance of these phones. Additionally, I compared their camera performance with my favorite foldable phones, the Motorola Razr Ultra 2026 and Razr Fold.

2Testing Process

I have been testing the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra since their launch on July 22. I captured photos in various scenarios and environments, using both devices alongside the Motorola Razr Ultra 2026 and Razr Fold. I took photos without adjusting any settings, using a point-and-shoot method. Managing four phones simultaneously wasn't easy, but I did my best to ensure a fair comparison.

3Hardware Differences

The hardware differences between the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra are quite significant. The Fold 8 comes with two 50MP cameras, while the Fold 8 Ultra boasts a massive 200MP primary sensor and a third telephoto camera. This difference allows the Fold 8 Ultra to capture more detailed photos. The Fold 8's photos tend to be softer and the colors appear more muted.

4Color and Detail

The Fold 8 Ultra's photos have more vibrant colors, while the Fold 8's colors appear more subdued. The Fold 8 Ultra's saturation can sometimes be excessive, especially with the color red. However, the ultrawide sensor performs better on the Fold 8, producing more vivid images. Both phones perform moderately well in selfie and portrait modes, but they lack proper tuning for skin tones.

5Zoom Performance

The Fold 8 Ultra clearly outperforms in zoom capabilities. The Fold 8 can take 2x optical quality shots, but quality drops beyond that. The Fold 8 Ultra's zoomed images are cleaner and more detailed, while the Fold 8 sometimes struggles to capture necessary details. The Fold 8's AI processing compensates somewhat for the lack of a telephoto camera, but consistency remains an issue.

6Ultrawide Comparison

The Fold 8's ultrawide photos are more vivid and preferable. The Fold 8 Ultra's ultrawide images appear slightly duller. This makes the Fold 8 stand out in landscape and wide-angle shots. Both phones perform well in this mode, but the Fold 8's colors look more realistic.

7Portrait Mode

Both phones show moderate performance in portrait mode. However, proper tuning for skin tones is lacking, resulting in less than ideal outcomes. The Fold 8 Ultra's portrait photos have more vibrant colors, while the Fold 8's photos look more natural. Both phones have room for improvement in this mode.

8Selfie Performance

Both phones show similar performance in selfie mode. The Fold 8 Ultra's selfies have more vibrant colors, while the Fold 8's selfies look more natural. However, both phones lack proper tuning for skin tones, resulting in less than ideal selfies. Both have room for improvement in this area.

9Night Mode

In night mode, the Fold 8 Ultra's photos are brighter and more detailed. The Fold 8's night photos appear darker with less detail. The Fold 8 Ultra's night mode performs better in low-light conditions. The Fold 8's night mode is comparatively weaker.

10Video Performance

The Fold 8 Ultra has better stabilization in video recording. The Fold 8's videos appear slightly shaky. The Fold 8 Ultra's video quality is higher with more distinct details. The Fold 8's videos are softer with less detail. Both phones perform well in video recording, but the Fold 8 Ultra leads.

11Results

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra deliver impressive camera performance. The Fold 8 Ultra excels in zoom and night mode, while the Fold 8 performs better in wide-angle shots. Both phones have room for improvement in portrait and selfie modes. Overall, the Fold 8 Ultra demonstrates superior camera performance.

12Key Takeaways

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Fold 8 Ultra stand out among foldable phones with their camera performance. The Fold 8 Ultra's 200MP primary sensor and telephoto camera deliver more detailed and vibrant photos. The Fold 8 performs better in wide-angle shots. Both phones have room for improvement in portrait and selfie modes. These phones are shaping the future of foldable phones with their camera capabilities.
