1Historical Monument Transformation

The former Monastery of Santa Maria de Arouca, a site classified as a National Monument since 1910, has undergone a significant transformation. The project converts a large portion of this monastic complex into a five-star hotel. This initiative is part of the broader REVIVE program, which focuses on repurposing heritage assets for modern use.

2Architectural Design Philosophy

Led by Fábio Milhazes, Rui Loureiro, Ana Ferreira, and Joana Monteiro, the design team prioritized historical continuity over simple functional adaptation. The project aims to articulate architecture, memory, and the surrounding landscape into a cohesive narrative. This approach ensures the building maintains its cultural significance while serving its new role as a luxury hotel.

3Scale and Project Scope

The architectural intervention covers a total area of 6698 square meters. Completed in 2025, the project required extensive interior decoration and structural planning to accommodate hospitality standards. The scale of the site reflects the complexity of integrating modern amenities within a protected, centuries-old stone structure while preserving the original monastic layout.

4Collaborative Material Selection

The project utilized a diverse range of manufacturers to achieve its high-end interior finish. Key suppliers included Geberit, Artinox, BRUMA, and Ferreira de Sá, alongside JNF and Marazzi Tiles. These brands provided the necessary technical and aesthetic components to balance the building's historic character with the functional requirements of a five-star hotel.

5Integration of Modern Infrastructure

Beyond the aesthetic restoration, the project involved complex infrastructure upgrades to meet contemporary hospitality demands. The integration of modern plumbing, lighting, and climate control systems was executed by firms like Roca and Rubicer. These technical installations were carefully placed to avoid compromising the integrity of the original 1910-classified monument walls and ceilings.

6Landscape and Spatial Narrative

The design strategy emphasizes the relationship between the interior spaces and the Arouca landscape. By treating the monastery as a living narrative, the architects created a flow that guides guests through the history of the site. This spatial arrangement ensures that the hotel experience remains deeply rooted in the location's unique cultural heritage.

7REVIVE Program Context

The project operates under the REVIVE program, a government-led initiative in Portugal designed to promote the rehabilitation of public heritage sites. By converting the monastery into a hotel, the program seeks to boost local tourism while funding the ongoing maintenance of the national monument, ensuring its long-term physical and economic viability.

8Impact of Adaptive Reuse

This development serves as a model for adaptive reuse in the hospitality sector. By successfully balancing preservation with luxury service, the project demonstrates how historic assets can remain relevant in the modern market. The completion in 2025 marks a new chapter for the monastery, securing its future through sustainable and culturally conscious development.
