World's tallest timber tower completed in Sydney by SHoP

Atlassian Central's hybrid timber structure sets new standards in sustainable architecture.

1Record-breaking height

Atlassian Central has become the world's tallest hybrid timber tower, surpassing 180 meters in height. Designed by SHoP Architects and BVN, the structure stands approximately 100 meters taller than Milwaukee's 25-story Ascent building. The tower offers over 75,000 square meters of office space, redefining Sydney's skyline with its innovative design.

2Seven timber habitats

The tower is organized into seven timber habitats, each spanning four floors. These spaces provide employees with access to daylight and natural ventilation through conditioned work areas. Austrian-sourced timber (10,000 m³) forms visible structural elements between steel-concrete levels, while planted terraces connect offices with the urban environment.

3Hybrid structural system

A strategic combination of timber, steel and concrete allows each material to perform optimally. Timber reduces overall weight and carbon footprint, while steel-concrete provides necessary strength for this scale. This approach enables prefabrication and dry construction methods, significantly improving construction efficiency and sustainability.

4Digital construction process

Built and Obayashi Corporation employed digital engineering to coordinate 8,000 tonnes of steel and 30,000 m³ of green concrete. The team virtually assembled the structure before physical construction began, ensuring precise integration of complex hybrid components. This methodology minimized errors in the ambitious structural system.

5Sustainability benchmarks

The project targets 50% lower embodied carbon and 50% better energy efficiency than conventional office towers. Operating entirely on renewable energy from day one, the building eliminates fossil fuel use. These features position Atlassian Central beyond standard NABERS 5 Star ratings for commercial developments.

6Urban development milestone

Atlassian Central demonstrates timber's potential in commercial high-rises, offering a replicable model for dense cities. Scheduled for completion in 2026, this Dexus-Atlassian joint venture may pioneer widespread adoption of hybrid systems. The tower will also serve as Atlassian's Australian headquarters upon opening.
