Kraken Launches DeFi Yield Vaults for Tokenized Stocks and ETFs
Earn up to 2% APY on Nvidia and major ETF tokens through on-chain lending strategies.
1New Product Launch
Kraken introduced on-chain yield vaults for three tokenized securities: NVDAx (Nvidia), SPYx (S&P 500 ETF), and QQQx (Nasdaq-100 ETF). Available from September 14, 2026, these vaults allow qualified clients in supported markets (excluding US, UK, UAE and others) to earn variable yields while maintaining market exposure. The platform shows initial fixed APY estimates of 2% for SPYx/QQQx and 1.8% for NVDAx after fees.
2How Vaults Work
Users allocate minimum 0.001 xStocks to Kraken's embedded self-custodial wallet, where Sentora-managed Veda vaults use them as collateral. The strategy involves borrowing stablecoins against these tokens and deploying them in DeFi protocols. Returns are automatically converted back into the original xStock (e.g., SPYx yields more SPYx). Withdrawals have a 3-day waiting period, with no allocation/gas fees but a 25% protocol performance fee.
3Target Markets
The service currently serves eligible customers across the European Economic Area and other supported jurisdictions. Notably excluded are major markets like the US, UK, Canada, Australia, UAE, and sanctioned regions. This geographic limitation reflects regulatory considerations around tokenized securities and DeFi products in different financial jurisdictions.
4Yield Generation Mechanism
The vaults employ a multi-step strategy: 1) Tokenized stocks serve as collateral, 2) Algorithms borrow stablecoins against this collateral, 3) Stablecoins are deployed across various DeFi protocols for yield farming. APY shown represents a trailing 7-day average and fluctuates with borrowing demand. During launch, Kraken displays fixed estimates to simplify user understanding before variable rates apply.
5Comparative Advantage
Unlike traditional stock lending programs that require share transfers, Kraken's solution maintains continuous market exposure while generating yield. The 2% APY compares favorably to 0.3-0.5% from conventional securities lending. However, it's lower than some pure DeFi yields due to conservative risk parameters and the underlying assets' stability.
6Added Risks
The structure introduces liquidation risks if collateral values drop sharply. Other risks include smart contract failures, bad debt accumulation, cross-chain execution issues, and wrapped asset exposures. Unlike bank deposits, vaults lack government protection schemes. Losses would be proportionally distributed among users, potentially affecting original allocations.
7Tokenized Securities Nature
xStocks are blockchain representations of conventional securities without direct ownership rights. Holders gain economic exposure but lack voting rights or shareholder privileges. The tokens derive value from the underlying assets but exist as separate instruments, creating additional layers of smart contract and bridge-related risks compared to traditional holdings.
8Market Implications
Kraken's move bridges traditional finance with DeFi, offering institutional-grade investors yield opportunities typically available only in crypto-native ecosystems. As tokenization accelerates, such products could pressure traditional brokers to innovate. However, regulatory clarity remains the key hurdle for widespread adoption beyond early crypto adopters in permitted regions.
