1Climate-responsive design for Okinawa

Materials were selected to withstand Miyakojima's subtropical climate. The Ryukyu limestone counter resists salt air and intense sun. Kii collaborated with an Okinawan plaster specialist to apply each limestone piece individually. The layered finish highlights the material's unique texture while ensuring durability.

2Creating a community hub

The design aimed to foster connections between locals, newcomers and tourists. The circular counter facilitates social interaction whether standing or seated. Woven Cogon grass cushions in the background emphasize comfort while incorporating local craftsmanship into the space.

3Typhoon-resistant details

Perforated concrete blocks address the region's frequent typhoons. Custom tiles by Tajimi Tiles integrate this regional characteristic seamlessly into the interior. The holes provide both aesthetic appeal and structural resilience against strong winds.

4Ice cream-inspired stools

Colorfully glazed stools from NOTA shop in Shigaraki were specially selected. Kii developed multiple prototypes to achieve a melting ice cream appearance. The pastel hues and non-directional design allow flexible placement under low tables throughout the space.

5Light-responsive color palette

The pale pink ceiling color was meticulously chosen to harmonize with Miyakojima's dramatic light changes. After extensive on-site testing at different times, this specific pink tone was selected to maintain harmony with surroundings both day and night.

6Celebrating regional craftsmanship

The design showcases artisanal traditions from across Japan. Okinawan plaster specialists shaped the limestone counter using traditional techniques. Shigaraki ceramics and local Cogon grass weaving represent diverse regional craft traditions.

7Functional durability

A small arched door in the counter allows easy filter maintenance. Materials were selected for both aesthetic appeal and practical endurance. The perforated tiles offer visual interest while serving functional purposes.

8Social impact of design

The space has successfully become the community hub it was designed to be. Observations confirm visitors linger both inside and outside, connecting across social groups. This oceanfront ice cream shop now serves as meaningful social infrastructure.
