Erwan Bouroullec Transforms Crumpled Tyvek into a Sculptural Wall Lamp
Designed in collaboration with Flos, Maap offers a customizable lighting system shaped by its users.
1Customizable Design
French designer Erwan Bouroullec has unveiled Maap, a wall-mounted lighting system in collaboration with Flos. The Tyvek diffuser can be shaped by users, creating a unique composition with each installation. Bouroullec emphasizes flexibility over a fixed form, allowing for personal interpretation.
2Material Choice
Bouroullec chose Tyvek after finding paper too fragile during development. Durable and lightweight, Tyvek can be reshaped repeatedly while maintaining its structure. Magnetic attachment points allow the diffuser to be easily repositioned on the steel framework.
3Architectural Flexibility
Maap offers a playful structure for architects and designers. Bouroullec highlights the project's philosophy of 'collaboration and play.' Large magnetic 'Dots' enable the Tyvek material to take on various forms, ensuring each setup is unique.
4Light Diffusion
Maap provides soft, ambient lighting rather than a single light source. Bouroullec compares the effect to sunlight filtering through a window. The oversized Tyvek diffuser turns walls into atmospheric light surfaces, blending decorative and architectural elements.
5Size Options
Maap comes in three sizes, with the largest spanning over 10 feet wide. This versatility makes it adaptable to different spatial needs. The lamp is suitable for both residential and commercial projects.
6Availability
Maap will be available starting July 21 at Flos flagship stores, flos.com, and Design Within Reach outlets. Bouroullec's innovative design aims to bring a fresh perspective to the world of lighting.
