Wheeler Kearns Architects Completes Staggered Timber Lane Retreat on Lake Michigan

A trio of interconnected volumes balances privacy, shoreline winds, and expansive panoramic views.

1Coastal Site Organization

Chicago-based Wheeler Kearns Architects completed Timber Lane Retreat along the Lake Michigan shoreline in Michigan. The residential layout relies on three distinct volumes organized around a central courtyard. A dedicated glazed corridor links these structures, framing an uninterrupted visual sightline that extends directly from the access street toward the water.

2Resolving Programmatic Tensions

The site demanded panoramic water views alongside privacy, wind protection, and neighborhood sensitivity. Instead of arranging living spaces parallel to the shoreline in a single block, the design team staggered the volumes. This architectural arrangement deliberately exposes multiple interior zones to distinct vantage points rather than offering one generic panoramic view.

3Streetfront Mass Configuration

Positioned closest to the street, the first two-story gabled volume houses functional utilitarian spaces on the ground level, including the garage and mudroom. The upper level contains a dedicated exercise room and sauna. This placement creates an initial privacy buffer between public street activity and the primary private living zones.

4Communal Pavilions and Porches

A single-story offset volume with a flat roof accommodates the kitchen, living, and dining spaces. Floor-to-ceiling sliding glass doors open these communal areas directly onto an outdoor patio. Anchoring the waterfront edge, the largest mass features a screened porch designed to navigate fluctuating coastal weather and wind exposure.

5Private Waterfront Accommodations

The primary waterfront structure organizes two guest suites along the outer edge of the property boundary. The entire second floor contains the primary bedroom suite and a private study. This separation ensures quiet isolation from ground-floor entertaining areas while maximizing elevated, direct sightlines over the lake waters.

6Courtyard Microclimate Strategy

Protected on three sides by the staggered layout, the internal garden courtyard sits on the site's northeast side. This protected outdoor zone serves as a quiet buffer between the public road and the lakefront. It actively channels natural daylight and passive cross-ventilation deep into all three residential structures.

7Regional Material Palette

The exterior pairs dark bronze standing-seam metal box ribbing with locally quarried light-toned limestone on the shorter mass. Combining recyclable metal cladding with regional stone establishes durability against harsh shoreline weather. Gabled rooflines maintain contextual alignment with neighboring residential structures while delivering a clean, contemporary aesthetic profile.

8Acoustic and Interior Strategy

Inside, character-grade domestic wood lines the floors and ceilings to introduce warmth. Designers integrated intentional gaps between wood ceiling boards, allowing concealed black insulation to absorb sound and regulate interior acoustics. Collaborators included Butter Eggs for interiors, McKay Landscape Architects, and builder Norman Zielke Residential Builder.
