BAFTA Announces 2026 Breakthrough Cohort for UK Creative Talent
Twenty-one emerging creatives receive mentorship and industry access through Netflix-supported BAFTA initiative.
1BAFTA Breakthrough 2026 Selection
BAFTA has unveiled its 2026 Breakthrough list, featuring 21 promising creatives from the UK film, games, and television sectors. Supported by Netflix, the initiative provides recipients with professional career guidance, networking opportunities, and full BAFTA membership. CEO Jane Millichip emphasized the program's role in fostering long-term career growth for these emerging talents.
2Diverse Games Industry Cohort
The five selected gaming professionals include Eloise Singer, Husban Siddiqi, Kate Killick, Niru Fekri-Arnold, and Tom McKay. These individuals represent various disciplines, from game direction and development to performance and creative design. Their selection highlights the breadth of talent currently driving innovation within the independent and immersive gaming sectors in Britain.
3Immersive Storytelling and Innovation
Eloise Singer, CEO of Singer Studios, was selected for her work on the VR experience The Pirate Queen. The project, which features voice acting by Lucy Liu, is expanding into a graphic novel and a new game. Singer noted that this was her eighth application, underscoring the persistence required for creative recognition.
4Independent Development and Funding
Husban Siddiqi, director of the space shooter Rogue Eclipse, credited his career trajectory to early gaming experiences. His debut project was among the first funded by Innersloth's Outersloth initiative in 2024. Siddiqi aims to use the BAFTA platform to mentor others and foster connections within the independent game development community.
5Overcoming Industry Challenges
Kate Killick, founder of Glowfrog Games, highlighted the perseverance required to launch her debut title, Pieced Together. Despite industry volatility, she successfully navigated three years of development. Killick plans to leverage the BAFTA network to increase the visibility of her studio as she prepares a demo for her next project.
6Human-Centric Design Philosophies
Niru Fekri-Arnold of Buried Things emphasizes creating games with a human soul, specifically contrasting his work against the rise of AI-generated content. Drawing from his background in immersive theatre and NASA projects, he views BAFTA as a vital champion for artists who seek to maintain creative integrity in a changing market.
7Performance in Interactive Media
Actor Tom McKay, known for his role in the Kingdom Come: Deliverance franchise, represents the intersection of traditional acting and gaming. He describes the medium as an art form with limitless narrative potential. McKay intends to use the Breakthrough program to deepen his involvement in the gaming sector beyond his current roles.
8Strategic Industry Impact
The BAFTA Breakthrough initiative serves as a critical bridge for emerging talent to access established industry networks. By providing mentorship and visibility, the program helps creators navigate the complexities of the creative economy. This support system is essential for maintaining a pipeline of diverse, high-quality artistic contributions in the UK's entertainment landscape.
