OMA's The Martin Completes as Former Prison Transformation Milestone
Amsterdam's Bijlmerbajes prison evolves into an energy-neutral urban neighborhood.
1Historic Transformation
Designed by OMA's David Gianotten and Mariano Sagasta, The Martin marks a key phase in converting the 1978-2016 prison complex into an energy-neutral district. The 7.5-hectare project blends original prison structures with contemporary architecture, creating a unique urban fabric in Amsterdam's skyline.
2Architectural Innovation
The building's four interlocking volumes create distinct facade expressions. An aluminum outer grid and continuous balconies visually connect private and public realms while providing outdoor space for each apartment. Positioned along the development's central axis, it physically and symbolically links different masterplan zones.
3Housing Diversity
The Martin offers 50 sqm two-room to 140 sqm four-room apartments. Moss-covered atria introduce greenery into shared spaces, while sixth and ninth-floor terraces provide panoramic views. Ground-floor commercial units and bookable multipurpose rooms enhance community interaction within this mixed-use development.
4Sustainable Practices
The project achieved 98% material reuse from the demolished prison, including concrete and cell doors. Geothermal systems and photovoltaic installations enable energy-neutral operation, aligning with Amsterdam's sustainability goals. This circular approach sets new standards for large-scale urban redevelopments.
5Heritage Preservation
OMA's masterplan retains key prison elements like Kalverstraat pathway, gardens, and a watchtower. The 135,000 sqm development integrates 1,350 homes (30% social housing) with cultural and commercial spaces. This sensitive approach demonstrates how historical layers can coexist with contemporary urban needs.
6Global Benchmark
Bajes Kwartier establishes an international model for transforming challenging structures into sustainable communities. OMA's vision highlights architecture's role in urban regeneration, proving that innovative design can turn restrictive spaces into vibrant, environmentally conscious neighborhoods.
