1Ban scope expanded

Russia has extended its cryptocurrency mining ban to include Moscow, the Moscow Region, and parts of Kursk Region. The new regulation will take effect on August 15, 2026, and remain until December 31, 2032. Resolution No. 936, signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on July 25, 2026, updates the previous ban issued in December 2024.

2Restricted areas increased

The updated rules add Moscow, Moscow Region, and certain areas in Kursk Region to the list of restricted zones. This measure expands existing cryptocurrency mining restrictions in regions facing electricity supply concerns. The ban also covers eight municipal districts and the city of Lgov in Kursk Region. Similar bans were previously implemented in Buryatia and Zabaykalsky Krai.

3Rising energy demand a key factor

The Moscow Region Energy Ministry stated that the mining ban was necessary due to increasing electricity demand. The ministry reported that 65 data centers with a total capacity of 734 megawatts (MW) are connected to the grid in Moscow and the Moscow Region. Nineteen of these, with 233 MW capacity, are located in the Moscow Region. According to TASS, growing energy consumption was the primary reason for the ban.

4Previous bans and durations

Cryptocurrency mining bans were previously implemented in Russian regions like Buryatia and Zabaykalsky Krai. The ban in these areas will last from April 1, 2026, to March 15, 2031. With the new regulations, the number of restricted areas and the duration of bans have significantly increased. Restrictions on crypto mining are becoming more widespread across the country.

5Energy consumption by data centers

The 19 data centers in Moscow Region have a combined capacity of 233 MW. Most of these facilities are used for cryptocurrency mining activities. The energy consumption of all 65 data centers in and around Moscow creates significant strain on the regional power grid. The Energy Ministry emphasized that this consumption makes it difficult to meet growing energy demands.

6Global crypto mining trends

Russia's decision is part of increasing global regulations on cryptocurrency mining. China and other countries have also imposed restrictions due to similar energy concerns. Russia's move reflects efforts to conserve energy resources and reduce strain on the power grid. Such bans could have significant consequences for the future of the crypto mining industry.

7Economic impacts of the ban

The cryptocurrency mining ban could have significant effects on Russia's digital economy plans. Mining operations were an important source of income in some regions. Long-term effects may include job losses and reduced investments. On the other hand, energy savings are expected. This situation highlights the balance between crypto industry and energy policies.

8Potential market repercussions

Russia's decision could impact the global cryptocurrency market. Restrictions in one of the world's largest crypto mining hubs may increase mining difficulty and affect crypto supply. Long-term, such regulations could change the geographical distribution of mining. Regions with low energy costs may emerge as new mining centers.
