BYD doubled its charging network in five months, aims to double again
Chinese auto giant plans further expansion of its ultra-fast charging infrastructure by year-end.
1Record growth
BYD opened its 10,000th Flash Charging station in late August, doubling its network in just five months. Each station features 1,500kW charging connectors. At this pace, BYD has been installing an average of 34 new stations daily. The company aims to reach 20,000 stations by year-end, requiring 80 new installations per day.
2Revolutionary charging speed
BYD's second-gen Blade batteries can charge from 10% to 97% in just 9 minutes using 1,500kW stations - among the fastest charging solutions available. A single BYD connector delivers 2.5 times the power that an entire European charging site will be required to provide by 2027 (600kW). This positions BYD far ahead of current European standards.
3Usage statistics
Over the past six months, BYD's charging network delivered 210 million kWh to 1.83 million drivers. Notably, nearly one-third of these drivers didn't own BYD vehicles. The network now spans over 300 Chinese cities, with the first 300 international stations planned for the UK by year-end.
4Strategic partnerships
Most of BYD's expansion comes through partnerships with Sinopec, PetroChina, CNOOC, Teld and JD.com rather than BYD's own capital. Of the planned 20,000 stations, 18,000 will be built with partners. China's oil majors have already begun installing megawatt-level EV chargers at their gas stations.
5Comparison with Europe
Europe's AFIR regulation requires 400kW total charging capacity every 60km on core roads (increasing to 600kW by 2027). Meanwhile, a single BYD connector delivers 2.5 times Europe's 2027 standard. Europe currently focuses more on curbside charging solutions for street-parked vehicles.
6Infrastructure challenges
The main technical challenge for BYD's high-power stations isn't grid connection. Each station's battery storage system buffers power draws that ordinary distribution networks couldn't handle. This smart solution reduces grid investment needs while enabling uninterrupted high-power charging.
7Market expansion strategy
BYD's charging network expansion complements its European market growth strategy. Chinese brands already hold record shares in Europe's auto market. Now, charging infrastructure supports this expansion. The planned 300 UK stations signal BYD's ambitions beyond vehicles into infrastructure.
8Industry transformation
BYD's aggressive expansion represents a significant shift in the EV ecosystem. Traditional oil companies investing in charging infrastructure signals energy sector transformation. High-power charging standards could eliminate charging time - one of the biggest barriers to EV adoption.
