WhatsApp testing encrypted cloud backup feature for iOS
Meta's messaging app to offer dedicated cloud storage for iOS users.
1Feature in Testing Phase
WhatsApp is testing encrypted cloud backup for iOS users in beta version. This feature will allow users to use WhatsApp's own cloud storage instead of iCloud. The development, discovered by WABetaInfo, appears in beta version 26.28.10.16, marking a significant privacy upgrade for iOS platform.
2Cross-Platform Compatibility
The new solution will offer 2GB free storage as an alternative to Google Drive on Android and iCloud on iOS. WhatsApp also plans to introduce a 50GB storage plan priced at $0.99/month. This approach ensures consistent user experience across different mobile platforms while enhancing data security.
3Enhanced Security Options
Users can protect their backups with a password, passkey, or 64-digit encryption key. Backups to WhatsApp's cloud will be end-to-end encrypted by default. To disable encryption, users would need to revert to existing solutions (Google Drive/iCloud), which currently offer optional encryption.
4Differences from Current System
While encryption is currently optional for Google Drive and iCloud backups, WhatsApp's native solution will have encryption enabled by default. This move significantly raises data privacy standards, demonstrating Meta's commitment to user security in messaging applications.
5Release Timeline Unclear
The feature is in final development stages for both Android and iOS, but the public release date remains uncertain. Upon completion, it's expected to roll out first to beta testers before becoming available to all users. The company continues refining the solution during ongoing tests.
6New Standard in Data Security
WhatsApp's initiative elevates data security standards in mobile communication. By addressing users' need for secure message history storage, this feature underscores the growing importance of encryption technologies in consumer applications, setting a new benchmark for privacy-focused messaging services.
