StarTech USB4 Dock Review: Native Dual Display Without Thunderbolt
An affordable, driver-free dual display solution for MacBook users.
1Introduction
The StarTech USB4 Dock offers dual display support for MacBooks without Thunderbolt's high cost. Compatible with M3 and later models, it stands out with its driver-free design. With 40Gbps USB4 connectivity and 100W power delivery, it provides a practical solution for users.
2Who Is It For?
This dock is ideal for MacBook users needing multi-display setups and IT teams managing mixed platforms. Its affordability compared to Thunderbolt stations makes it a budget-friendly choice. However, it's not suitable for base M1/M2 users.
3Technical Specs
The product features a 40Gbps USB4 input, two 10Gbps USB-C ports, and three USB-A ports. It includes 2.5Gb Ethernet and a 134W power adapter. For display connections, it offers two DisplayPorts. However, low charging output from USB ports may disappoint fast-charging users.
4Difference from Thunderbolt
USB4 delivers the same bandwidth as Thunderbolt 3/4 at a lower cost. Despite macOS lacking MST support, this dock excels with driver-free dual display capability. Not requiring DisplayLink software eliminates compatibility issues with streaming services.
5Shortcomings
The dock's main drawbacks are limited port count and low USB power output. With only 7.5W USB-C and 4.5W USB-A ports, it falls short for fast-charging needs. Additionally, its 2.5Gb Ethernet is inferior to competitors offering 10Gbps networking.
6Security Features
Designed for IT teams, the product includes a screw-secured USB4 connection, integrated lock slots, and VESA mounting options. These features prevent theft and unauthorized access in office environments, adding value for security-conscious organizations.
7Verdict
The StarTech USB4 Dock is a balanced alternative to Thunderbolt. While its driver-free dual display support and affordability stand out, compromises in port variety and charging power should be considered. It's a practical solution for office deployments and budget-conscious individual users.
