Sloping Green Roofs Strengthen Family Bonds in Indonesian Home

K-Thengono Design Studio's design merges indoor and outdoor spaces with green roofs.

1Core Design Philosophy

Kelvin Thengono, founder of K-Thengono Design Studio, states that the main design goal was to create a seamless sequence of spaces connecting family members. Sloping green roofs provide natural transitions between indoor and outdoor areas. Split volumes offer different pathways, guiding family members to shared spaces. This design aims to deliver a living environment in harmony with the surrounding landscape.

2Ground Floor Layout

The home's ground floor features an L-shaped plan wrapped in bamboo-textured concrete facades. Rooms are arranged around a garden patio. The entrance foyer and staircase are clad in woven rattan panels made from recycled PET material. These panels allow natural light and ventilation to reach upper levels while softening the concrete's harsh appearance for aesthetic balance.

3First Floor and Social Spaces

The first floor contains bedrooms, bathrooms, and an open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area. A glass door on one side opens onto a sloping grassy roof with an outdoor staircase leading to the swimming pool and barbecue area above. On the opposite side, an indoor staircase with wide steps serves as seating for TV viewing and socializing.

4Upper Floor and Fitness Areas

The top of the indoor staircase houses a gym. Above the gym, an outdoor green-roofed staircase ascends to a rooftop yoga space. This design integrates physical activity and relaxation areas. Additionally, stepped seating in the TV room provides access to the upper-level gym.

5Material Choices and Aesthetics

The project uses contrasting materials like concrete and rattan. Concrete gives the home a robust presence, while woven rattan panels add softness. The rattan panels also filter natural light, enhancing privacy. Their patterns celebrate Indonesian vernacular culture, blending tradition with contemporary design.

6Sustainable Design Elements

The design emphasizes sustainability through rattan panels made from recycled PET. Green roofs provide natural ventilation and thermal insulation. Garden areas and water features regulate the home's microclimate. These elements boost energy efficiency while offering an eco-friendly lifestyle, aligning with modern environmental priorities.

7Respect for Regional Architecture

The design merges traditional Indonesian architectural elements with a modern approach. Patterns on woven panels celebrate local culture. The flow between open and enclosed spaces supports a tropical lifestyle. This approach honors the region's architectural heritage while meeting contemporary living needs.

8Design That Transforms Family Life

Split Mass Residence offers a living space that strengthens connections among family members and with nature. Sloping green roofs and social areas enhance daily interactions. This design showcases modern architecture's role in fostering family bonds. Sustainable materials and local aesthetics create a universal example of thoughtful, culturally rooted design.
