1SOFID Trading Goes Live

Kraken announced the availability of SoFiUSD (SOFID) stablecoin for trading starting September 4, 2026. Users can deposit SOFID through supported networks on Kraken's platform. The exchange warns that deposits via unsupported networks will result in permanent loss of assets. SOFID joins Kraken's growing list of tradable digital assets, with more expected to be added following the exchange's confidential listing policy.

2What is SOFID?

SOFID is a U.S. dollar payment stablecoin issued by nationally chartered SoFi Bank, regulated by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. Unlike investment products, it's designed to maintain 1:1 parity with USD for payments and settlements. SoFi Bank maintains equivalent reserve assets, consisting of cash, demand deposits, and other high-quality liquid assets as per U.S. law. The bank provides regular reports on reserve composition verified by an independent U.S. CPA.

3Reserve Transparency

SoFi Bank commits to full transparency regarding SOFID's backing. Reserve assets must at least match the outstanding stablecoin supply, composed exclusively of high-quality liquid assets. These include physical U.S. currency and cash equivalents permitted under applicable regulations. Independent attestations verify the reserve adequacy, though SOFID holders should note the stablecoin isn't FDIC or SIPC insured and doesn't constitute legal tender or pay interest.

4Issuance Mechanics

SOFID operates through direct issuance and redemption by SoFi Bank with approved customers under separate agreements. The stablecoin exists on both Ethereum and Solana blockchains. Importantly, simply holding or transferring SOFID doesn't grant redemption rights with the issuer. Market prices may fluctuate above or below the $1 peg in secondary trading, as the stablecoin isn't designed as an investment vehicle but rather as a payment instrument.

5Kraken's Trading Conditions

While SOFID deposits and trading are live, Kraken notes that trading via its mobile app and Instant Buy feature will activate only after meeting liquidity thresholds. The exchange implements geographic restrictions for certain jurisdictions. Kraken maintains its policy of not disclosing potential future listings until just before launch, with all new assets announced through official channels like its Listings Roadmap and social media.

6Stablecoin Market Impact

SOFID's entry expands the options for dollar-pegged stablecoins in crypto markets, joining established players like USDT and USDC. Its bank-issued status and regulatory oversight differentiate it from algorithmic stablecoins. The launch comes as regulators globally increase scrutiny on stablecoin issuers' reserve practices and consumer protections, making SOFID's transparent approach noteworthy in the evolving digital asset landscape.

7User Considerations

Potential SOFID users should understand several key aspects: the stablecoin isn't a deposit account, carries no insurance protection, and doesn't yield interest. While designed to maintain parity, secondary market prices may vary. Users must ensure they deposit SOFID only through supported blockchain networks to avoid irreversible losses. Kraken's geographic restrictions may limit access for some international traders.

8Future of Digital Asset Trading

SOFID's listing reflects Kraken's strategy to expand its stablecoin offerings amid growing demand for regulated crypto payment solutions. As traditional financial institutions like SoFi Bank enter the stablecoin space, their products may bridge gaps between conventional finance and blockchain ecosystems. This development signals continued maturation of crypto markets with increased institutional participation and regulatory compliance expectations.
