1Michigan lake house renovated

Lauri Design Studio renovated the Willow Point house overlooking Michigan's Grand Traverse Bay. Built in 2005 in a contemporary style, the house lacked the warmth envisioned by its new owners. The original steel staircase was refaced with metallic plaster to add depth and texture. Natural materials and handcrafted details were used to bring out the softer side of the architecture.

2Strengthened interior-landscape relationship

The house's floor plan was completely redesigned. Staircases were relocated, sight lines were cleared, and views were framed. These changes improved spatial flow while strengthening the relationship between the interior and the surrounding landscape. The glass-wrapped lower floor combines the kitchen, dining room, living room, and family room into a large gathering space.

3Warm atmosphere with natural materials

In the kitchen, a new picture window carved into a concrete wall offers a view of the forest. Textured Ceppo stone, resembling Lake Michigan's sandy shores, was chosen for countertops and surfaces. In the living and dining area, a Kelly Farley sculpture hangs from the ceiling beside a reimagined fireplace, surrounded by a mix of soft and metallic furniture. Layered textures and sculptural furnishings create a refined and welcoming atmosphere.

4Renovated staircases and entry

The original steel staircase connects all three floors and was refinished with metallic plaster to add texture and depth. The main entry staircase was relocated and reconstructed with solid travertine, ash treads, and a curved plaster handrail. These changes enhanced the home's overall aesthetics and functionality.

5Special spaces created for the family

Upstairs, a family 'mosh pit' was formed in a newly created loft space. This area offers a cushioned spot for relaxing together with views across the lake. Inspired by the nostalgia of a sunken living room, it has become the family's favorite gathering place for card games, movie nights, and afternoon naps.

6Primary suite designed like a private apartment

The primary suite was modelled after a private apartment, featuring its own lounge and kitchenette. A Travertino Rizzi stone bathroom vanity overlooks Grand Traverse Bay. This design provides the homeowners with both comfort and scenic enjoyment.

7Design focused on family traditions

Lauri Design Studio designed the house around the family's evolving traditions. Spaces were created where multiple generations can gather, reconnect, and build memories for years to come. This approach ensured the house is not just a living space but also a memory-making place.

8Michigan's lakeside potential

Michigan's extensive shorelines along three of North America's Great Lakes offer countless potential for waterfront dwellings. Other examples in the state include a wood-wrapped house comprising three separate structures by Wheeler Kearns Architects, a multi-level home for 'people of all ages and mobilities' by DMAC Architecture Interiors, and a residence with two wings that intersect at irregular angles by Snow Kreilich.
