World's tallest hybrid timber tower completed in Sydney
Atlassian Central ushers in a new era of sustainable architecture.
1Record-breaking architecture
Atlassian Central has claimed the title of world's tallest hybrid timber skyscraper at 180 meters. Surpassing Milwaukee's Ascent tower by nearly 100 meters, this structure serves as the Sydney headquarters for tech giant Atlassian. The harmonious combination of timber, steel and concrete makes this tower a groundbreaking achievement in sustainable architecture.
2Innovative structural system
The 39-story skyscraper features a unique hybrid system with concrete cores supporting mass timber floors. A steel exoskeleton reinforces the structure, while 'mega floors' placed every four stories vertically divide the building into 'habitats'. These timber-dominated spaces contain offices along with multi-level atriums and elevated parks.
3Environmental benefits
Timber usage significantly reduced the building's weight and carbon footprint. The design team aims for 50% less embodied carbon compared to conventional steel-concrete towers, along with 50% improvement in operational energy efficiency. Natural ventilation systems and green spaces establish new standards for sustainable work environments.
4Architectural vision
SHoP Architects' Andreia Teixeira describes the project as innovation that 'will redefine how people gather, collaborate and create'. The design reimagines natural habitats within an urban tower, connecting occupants to each other and nature. This concept serves as an inspirational model for future office buildings.
5Historical integration
The tower rises next to Sydney Central Station, incorporating 'The Parcels Shed' - a historic building that served as cargo depot and youth hostel. While facade work continues, completion is scheduled for year-end. This approach harmoniously blends modern and heritage architecture.
6Global impact
BVN's Peter Titmuss emphasizes that hybrid mass timber technology not only reduces carbon footprint but transforms skyscraper construction through prefabrication and dry assembly techniques. As a prototype for future timber towers, Atlassian Central represents a significant milestone in sustainable high-rise design worldwide.
