Foglio: A Minimalist Markdown Editor for macOS
Live preview, 5MB size, and MIT license make it stand out.
1What is Foglio?
Foglio is a minimalist Markdown editor developed for macOS. Its live preview feature instantly visualizes the text you type, offering a smoother writing experience without the need for traditional split views or preview modes.
2Why Foglio?
Foglio provides a native solution in contrast to popular editors like Typora being closed-source and open-source alternatives like Mark Text being Electron-based. It starts quickly with just a 5MB size and does not convert your Markdown files into another format.
3Core Features
Foglio renders Markdown elements such as headings, bold and italic text, links, tables, task lists, quotes, images, and code blocks in place. It supports syntax highlighting for 143 languages in code blocks and allows updating task lists with a click.
4Finder Integration
Foglio works seamlessly with macOS's Finder application. You can open any .md, .markdown, or .mdx file by double-clicking it. If the same file is already open, it focuses on the existing window instead of opening a new one.
5Development and Testing
Foglio is developed using Node.js and Rust toolchains. Code reliability is ensured through tests in critical areas such as HTML escape characters, link targets, table and image parsing. Every bug is manually verified by running the application and reading the screen.
6Future Plans
Foglio is developed with the goal of staying small and minimalist. Features like mathematical expressions and Mermaid diagrams may be added in the future. However, features like themes, plugins, and auto-update have been intentionally excluded.
