Fake investment platform network dismantled in Ukraine
Organized crime network stealing cryptocurrencies from users in over 20 countries uncovered.
1Operation details
Ukraine's National Police dismantled an organized cryptocurrency fraud network targeting users from over 20 countries. The operation revealed 46 Ukrainian citizens involved in the criminal scheme. Fake investment platforms were used to steal users' crypto assets. The network operated internationally using server infrastructure in the Netherlands.
2Fraud methodology
Criminals created professional-looking fake investment platforms to lure victims. After users registered and connected their crypto wallets, they were shown fake transactions and investment returns. When attempting to withdraw funds, victims were asked to connect their main wallets, at which point hidden software (cryptodrainer) stole all assets.
3International impact
The operation identified 62 victims from countries including Germany, Poland, Spain, France, UK, Canada and Israel. Police data shows the network operated in numerous countries. Seized data included user information, wallet addresses and records of stolen amounts.
4Seized evidence
34 raids in Kyiv and surrounding areas yielded significant evidence. Police seized over 100 computers, more than 100 phones, 79 SIM cards, a GSM gateway and 15 vehicles. The criminals' digital infrastructure and communication tools were confiscated. However, the total damage amount hasn't been disclosed yet.
5Criminal network structure
Over 46 individuals with different roles were identified in the organized network. Some criminals created fake investment sites while others communicated with potential victims. The network operated with professional division of labor on an international scale. Internal communications and operational details were obtained from servers.
6Technological infrastructure
The scammers used server infrastructure located in the Netherlands for global operations. Special software (cryptodrainer) integrated into websites could siphon all crypto assets without leaving traces. The system was designed to completely empty victims' wallets and required high technical expertise.
7Previous similar operation
Ukrainian authorities had previously dismantled a similar fake crypto academy. Such organized crimes appear to be increasing in the cryptocurrency ecosystem. Authorities plan to intensify operations against such networks through international cooperation. Crypto fraud has become a global security concern.
8Industry significance
This operation highlights security vulnerabilities and organized crime threats in the crypto sector. Investors need to be cautious about fake platforms. Regulators and law enforcement must implement stricter measures against digital asset fraud. The incident once again proves how critical security is in the crypto ecosystem.
