Solana validators approve proposal to accelerate SOL disinflation
Annual disinflation rate doubled from 15% to 30%, reducing future SOL issuance
1Disinflation rate doubled
Solana validators approved proposal SGP-0002, doubling the network's annual disinflation rate from 15% to 30%. This change will reduce future SOL supply without altering the long-term inflation target of 1.5%. The vote saw 67% support, 25.16% against, and 7.84% abstentions. Participation reached 60.7% of eligible stakes.
2Significant reduction in token supply expected
Under the new disinflation schedule, Solana will reach its 1.5% terminal inflation rate in 2.8 years, compared to 5.7 years under the previous plan. Solana Compass estimates 18.9 million fewer SOL will be minted over the next six years. This will reduce dilution for SOL holders but also decrease staking rewards for validators and delegators.
3First binding governance process
This vote was part of Solana's first binding governance process. The process also approved a Solana Constitution while rejecting a separate proposal on resource and inclusion fees. As the first major test of the governance mechanism, it demonstrated the network's decentralized decision-making capabilities.
4Major stakeholders divided
Large stakeholders were divided on SGP-0002. Figment, with 17.1 million SOL staked, voted entirely against the measure, while Helius and Jupiter strongly supported it. Some participants like Kraken changed positions during voting. Kraken initially voted against but ultimately supported the proposal with over 90% of its 8.9 million SOL voting stake.
5US Solana ETFs break records
The governance vote coincided with growing popularity of US-listed Solana investment products. Bitwise's Solana ETF surpassed $1 billion in assets, becoming the first to reach this milestone. According to Bloomberg's Eric Balchunas, US Solana ETFs have attracted approximately $1.7 billion in net inflows since launch with minimal sustained outflows.
6Transaction volume hits all-time high
During the governance vote period, Solana network activity reached record levels. The network processed 4.2 billion transactions while SOL token price rallied 40%. These developments indicate renewed momentum in the Solana ecosystem following weaker performance earlier this year.
7Long-term tokenomics implications
The increased disinflation rate will significantly impact Solana's token economics. Reduced SOL supply means less dilution for current holders but also lower staking rewards for validators and delegators, potentially affecting network security long-term. The change represents Solana's gradual shift toward a Bitcoin-like fixed supply approach.
8Significant milestone for crypto ecosystem
Solana's decision to increase disinflation sets an important precedent for token supply management in crypto. It demonstrates projects' ability to adjust token economics over time and proves decentralized governance systems can manage large-scale economic decisions. This development may serve as a model for other blockchain projects.
