BUERO BB Completes Circular Wilnsdorf School and Sports Hall Complex
A sustainable educational facility combines regional timber and recycled viaduct concrete.
1Topography and Compact Layout
Architecture firm BUERO BB completed the Wilnsdorf Primary School and Sports Hall in western Germany. Covering 4600 square meters, the compact structure is positioned directly into a wooded slope. The design balances spatial efficiency with natural surroundings, creating an integrated environment for modern elementary and middle school education.
2Circular Concrete Repurposing
A defining structural innovation of the project is the deliberate reuse of demolished infrastructure. The building integrates recycled concrete salvaged from a local viaduct alongside regional precast concrete elements. This circular economy approach directly reduces the carbon footprint while demonstrating practical material recycling within municipal public building developments.
3Timber Hybrid Materiality
The structural system pairs robust masonry and concrete elements with extensive timber construction. By mixing regional precast parts with timber framing, the design achieves high structural performance and low embodied energy. The natural interior finishes emphasize wood to deliver an inviting, warm atmosphere suitable for primary school learning.
4Collaborative Architectural Leadership
The project was directed by lead architects Julie Scheffler, Jakob Bickel, and Prof. Michael Bertsch alongside Dr. Mirko Immendörfer. Collaborating with Architektur Immendörfer, an extensive design team executed the technical drawings. Project management was handled by Thorsten Wagener, coordinating multiple specialized disciplines across every design and execution phase.
5Specialized Engineering Integration
Structural engineering was delivered by Engelsmann Peters GmbH, ensuring seamless coordination between heavy precast concrete and timber systems. G-TEC Ingenieure GmbH oversaw mechanical, electrical, and plumbing engineering. Additional technical expertise was provided by Pirmin Jung and Julian Henschel to resolve specific timber load-bearing and assembly challenges.
6Acoustic and Environmental Comfort
Educational environments require precise auditory and ambient conditions to facilitate clear learning. Graner + Partner Ingenieure handled acoustic engineering to mitigate reverberation between open sports areas and adjacent classrooms. The compact volume also optimizes thermal performance, helping maintain balanced indoor climates across changing seasons on the wooded slope.
7Landscape and Terrain Dialogue
Landscape architects Klaus Saur and Doris Herrmann integrated the educational facility into its sloping terrain. The outdoor design respects the existing wooded context, minimizing severe grade interventions. Outdoor circulation paths connect the main building, sports hall, and nature zones, creating functional recreational spaces for students.
8Blueprint for Circular Infrastructure
Wilnsdorf Primary School illustrates how municipal developments can systematically incorporate circular principles. By utilizing salvaged local infrastructure waste and sustainable timber, the project establishes a scalable methodology for public architecture. Completed in 2026, it serves as a pragmatic reference for low-carbon, site-sensitive educational facilities.
