Transparent-domed stadium design revealed for Kansas City Chiefs

Manica unveils $3 billion stadium project set to open in 2031.

1Mega project kicks off

Architecture firm Manica has unveiled designs for a new 70,000-seat stadium for the Kansas City Chiefs NFL team. The $3 billion project will replace the iconic Arrowhead Stadium, with completion scheduled for 2031. The stadium will feature a transparent dome made of ETFE panels, marking a significant upgrade for the franchise.

2Blending tradition with innovation

The new stadium aims to preserve the legendary atmosphere of Arrowhead while introducing modern facilities. CEO Clark Hunt emphasized maintaining the noisy environment and tailgating culture that defines the current stadium experience. Iconic elements like the 'drum deck' and ring of honor will be incorporated into the new design.

3Special dome for military flyovers

The 37,000-square-meter transparent ETFE roof is specifically designed to maximize visibility for military aircraft flyovers. Despite being fully enclosed, the stadium's geometry will replicate Arrowhead's renowned loud atmosphere. Signature features including the distinctive seating bowl design will be preserved in the new structure.

4Suburban location with massive parking

Breaking from the NFL trend toward urban stadiums, the Chiefs' new home will remain at its current suburban location surrounded by expansive parking lots. These lots are being specifically designed to enhance the tailgating experience. Local firm HNTB is collaborating with Manica as architect of record on the project.

5Showcasing local design talent

Chiefs president Mark Donovan praised Kansas City's world-class design talent demonstrated throughout the selection process. Manica founder David Manica called the project the honor of a lifetime. The design team is creating a stadium that serves not just current fans but future generations, reflecting the passion of one of sports' greatest fanbases.

6NFL stadium arms race continues

The Chiefs join the Washington Commanders and Buffalo Bills as latest NFL teams to announce new stadium projects. These mega-investments highlight the league's commercial growth and focus on fan experience. Manica's innovative design points to a new era in sports architecture, balancing tradition with cutting-edge technology.
