Singapore Non-Profit Plans Crisis Shelter for Men in Distress
New facility aims to provide temporary housing and support for men facing personal crises.
1New Crisis Shelter Initiative
Fellowship of Men Singapore plans to launch a crisis shelter for men by the second quarter of 2027. The initiative provides a temporary safe space for individuals facing displacement, abuse, or emotional distress. By offering a place to stay, the organization hopes to prevent domestic violence and support men during critical life transitions.
2Pilot Program Logistics
The initial pilot phase will utilize budget hotels to accommodate up to three men simultaneously. Each participant can stay for a maximum of seven nights at no charge. The organization aims to assist approximately 50 men within the first year, eventually transitioning to a dedicated facility within five years of the program start.
3Addressing Domestic Dynamics
The shelter aims to encourage men to remove themselves from volatile home environments before situations escalate. By providing a neutral space, the program allows men to regulate their emotions and take responsibility for their behavior. This approach seeks to protect family members while ensuring the man receives necessary counseling and social work support.
4Rigorous Resident Assessment
Prospective residents will undergo a thorough assessment to ensure the safety of their partners and children remains the priority. Individuals identified as posing an immediate risk of violence or suicide, or those requiring acute psychiatric care, will be referred to clinical services. The shelter is designed to support, not excuse, harmful behavioral patterns.
5Rising Male Victimization
Data from the Ministry of Social and Family Development shows 337 cases of husbands reporting spousal violence in 2025. This represents a 12 percent increase from the 302 cases reported in 2024. Men accounted for 18 percent of total spousal violence victims, with physical abuse being the most commonly reported form of mistreatment.
6Mentorship and Recovery
The program pairs residents with trained mentors who often have personal experience with similar struggles. With 40 mentors currently involved, the group connects men to legal aid, counseling, and social services. This peer-to-peer model aims to break the silence surrounding male vulnerability and provide a less intimidating entry point for professional help.
7Fundraising for Operations
Fellowship of Men Singapore is seeking to raise 36,500 dollars to cover the pilot program costs. This budget accounts for approximately 100 dollars per night for each man, covering accommodation, food, and mentor transport. A boxing and muay thai charity event is scheduled for November 7 to help secure these necessary operational funds.
8Long-term Support Goals
The seven-night stay is intended as a starting point for long-term stability rather than a permanent solution. By providing immediate relief, the organization hopes to guide men toward sustained recovery and healthier relationships. The project highlights the critical need for accessible, non-stigmatizing support systems for men navigating severe personal and emotional crises.
