Apple Music Launches Selfie Sing Karaoke Feature in iOS 27.3 Beta
Users can now record video performances with vocal effects directly within the Apple Music app.
1New Karaoke Integration
Apple Music is expanding its karaoke capabilities with the introduction of Selfie Sing in the iOS 27.3 beta. This feature allows users to record themselves singing along to tracks while lyrics scroll in real time. It builds upon the existing Sing functionality, which originally launched in 2022 to adjust vocal levels.
2Operational Workflow
To use the feature, users select a compatible song, enable their camera, and record their performance. The interface displays lyrics on the screen while the original vocals remain audible at a low volume. Once the recording concludes, users can save the video to their photo library or share it with friends.
3Vocal Customization Options
The tool includes built-in audio processing to enhance user performances. Before saving or sharing, singers can modify their voice using specific effects such as Megaphone, Echo, Concert Hall, and Studio. Users also have the ability to adjust the volume of their own voice relative to the backing track during the process.
4Curated Song Selection
Selfie Sing is currently restricted to a specific, curated playlist rather than the entire Apple Music catalog. The list features iconic tracks like Kelly Clarkson's Since U Been Gone, Madonna's Like a Virgin, and Britney Spears' Baby One More Time. Additional artists included in the selection are Oasis, Whitney Houston, and Marvin Gaye.
5Current Technical Limitations
The feature is currently in its early developer beta stage, resulting in several functional constraints. Notably, video recordings are capped at a one-minute duration, which limits the ability to perform full songs. Furthermore, the feature is only accessible to those running the latest iOS 27.3 beta software on their devices.
6Broader iOS 27.3 Updates
The iOS 27.3 update, which is expected to see a wide public release this December, includes more than just karaoke tools. The beta version also introduces significant updates to the Health app and integrates new Siri AI features. These additions suggest a broader effort to enhance user interaction across the mobile ecosystem.
7Development and Testing
The feature was first identified by code sleuth Aaron Perris within the beta software. While early demonstrations featured Animoji, Apple has clarified that this is not a native component of the Selfie Sing tool. Testing has confirmed the feature is fully functional on hardware such as the iPhone Duo device.
8Future Feature Evolution
Given that Selfie Sing is currently in the developer beta phase, it is highly probable that existing limitations will be addressed in future iterations. Users should expect potential adjustments to song availability and recording length as the software moves toward its final public release scheduled for later this year in December.
