1Architectural Concept and Location

The Suspension House project, designed by Fougeron Architecture, is located in California. The residence is uniquely positioned, suspended between two hills, and spans directly over a natural creek. This design choice creates a seamless connection between the built environment and the surrounding landscape, which features a waterfall in the backyard.

2Project Scope and Timeline

Completed in 2022, the project involved a comprehensive renovation and extension of an existing single-family house. The total area of the architectural intervention covers 2,500 square feet. Led by principal architect Anne Fougeron and project manager Todd Aranaz, the design team focused on integrating modern structural elements into the site.

3Structural and Engineering Challenges

Executing a design that spans a creek required specialized engineering expertise. Endres Studio served as the structural engineer, while Adobe Associates handled civil engineering and Rockridge Geotechnical provided geotechnical analysis. These teams ensured the stability of the structure while navigating the complex terrain and the presence of the flowing water.

4Material Selection and Suppliers

The project utilized a diverse range of high-end materials and brands to achieve its aesthetic and functional goals. Key manufacturers involved include Corian, RHEINZINK, and Sky-Frame. Other notable contributors provided specialized interior and exterior products, such as Agape, Hunter Douglas, Poliform, Rimadesio, and Stone Fleury, ensuring a high-quality finish throughout.

5Design Team and Collaboration

The design team included Niiraj Kapadia, Fionnuala Bhreathnach, Mariana Alberola, Jennifer Li, and Ana Finkelstein. Beyond the core architecture team, the project benefited from the expertise of Ground Studio for landscape architecture and Dan Dodt for lighting consultation. Barry Builders acted as the primary contractor, managing the complex construction process on-site.

6Integration with Natural Landscape

The house is defined by its relationship with the California topography. By bridging the creek, the architecture emphasizes the waterfall feature located in the backyard. This approach highlights the firm's commitment to residential design that prioritizes site-specific conditions, using glass and steel as primary materials to maintain visual transparency.

7Renovation and Extension Dynamics

As a renovation and extension project, the Suspension House demonstrates how existing residential structures can be transformed through modern intervention. The design does not merely replace the old but extends the living space to engage with the natural environment, effectively turning a challenging site into a central feature of the home.

8Significance of Residential Engineering

This project serves as a case study in residential engineering, showcasing how modern architectural practices can overcome environmental constraints. By utilizing advanced structural solutions, the architects successfully created a dwelling that exists in harmony with its natural surroundings, setting a benchmark for future residential projects located on difficult, sloped terrain.
