1Project Overview

The 112 sqm Ukigumo (Floating Clouds) Residence in Tokyo's Suginami district challenges conventional urban housing. Designed by architect Ukei Shimada as his personal home, the project completed in 2025 draws inspiration from sky gaps between neighboring buildings. Featuring products from Bosch, Delta Faucet and LIXIL, the residence was photographed by Koji Fujii of TOREAL studio. The design integrates structural engineering by Ladderup Architects and HVAC solutions by ZO Consulting Engineers.

2Architectural Philosophy

Shimada rethinks quality living in Japan's typical dense neighborhoods through minimalist interventions. The project emphasizes sky voids and floating clouds visible between surrounding buildings. Constructed by Miyashima Koumuten Co., the design incorporates Weru Landscape's outdoor spaces and Koizumi Lighting's atmospheric solutions. Zucchetti's bathroom fixtures complement the wood-dominated material palette, creating functional aesthetics within compact urban plots.

3Spatial Experience

The residence's namesake 'floating clouds' concept manifests through dynamic natural light patterns. Strategic openings frame sky views while maintaining privacy in the dense neighborhood. Interior spaces flow seamlessly into Weru Landscape-designed outdoor areas, enhanced by Koizumi's lighting systems. Wood materials provide warmth and structural flexibility, meeting Tokyo's seismic requirements through passive design strategies developed with ZO Consulting Engineers.

4Urban Context

Located in Suginami Ward, the project addresses Tokyo's characteristic high-density residential fabric. The design demonstrates contemporary living standards within traditional neighborhood scales, proving quality isn't dictated by plot size. Shimada's observation of sky gaps between existing houses informed the architectural concept, translating urban constraints into design opportunities through innovative spatial solutions.

5Technical Execution

The 112 sqm residence features structural engineering by Ladderup Architects and mechanical systems by ZO Consulting Engineers. General contractor Miyashima Koumuten Co. implemented the design that complies with Tokyo's strict seismic codes. Energy-efficient passive strategies include optimized building orientation and thermal mass materials. Wood construction maintains structural integrity while contributing to the project's minimalist aesthetic and connection to Japanese architectural traditions.

6Design Process

Shimada developed the concept while observing sky gaps and floating clouds from the empty lot, transforming this into a design philosophy connecting urban dwellers with natural elements. Digital modeling tools helped refine spatial configurations that reinterpret traditional Japanese housing for contemporary needs. The process balanced aesthetic aspirations with practical considerations of Tokyo's building regulations and microclimate conditions.

7Material Strategy

Dominant wood usage references Japanese architectural heritage while meeting modern performance standards. Bosch kitchen appliances, Delta Faucet fixtures and LIXIL bathroom solutions provide functionality, complemented by Koizumi's lighting systems that create changing atmospheres. Zucchetti's design objects add refined details. The material palette achieves durability and low maintenance without compromising the minimalist aesthetic vision.

8Urban Contribution

Ukigumo Residence prototypes quality living solutions for Tokyo's dense neighborhoods. By making sky perspectives part of daily life, the design demonstrates possibilities for peaceful living within urban intensity. The project serves as an important reference for developing local architectural responses to global urbanization challenges, showing how thoughtful design can transform constraints into livable, inspiring spaces.
