Samsung Galaxy Z 8 Series: Which Model is Right for You?
Comparative review of three new foldable phones and their target audiences
1New Galaxy Z 8 Series Announced
Samsung unveiled the Galaxy Z 8 series, featuring two book-style foldables for the first time. The lineup includes Z Fold 8, Z Fold 8 Ultra, and Z Flip 8 models, each targeting different consumer needs. All models run on Android 17-based One UI 9 with promised 7 years of OS updates. Sales begin globally on August 7. The series represents Samsung's continued innovation in foldable display technology and premium smartphone experiences.
2Z Fold 8: Compact Book Experience
The Galaxy Z Fold 8 offers a smaller form factor than previous Fold models. When folded, it's roughly passport-sized, unfolding to reveal a 7.6-inch LTPO AMOLED tablet-like display. The 5.5-inch outer screen complements the design. Optimized for vertical content like e-books and Pokémon Go. Features 4,800mAh battery with 45W fast charging. Starts at $1,900, making it the most affordable book-style foldable in the series. The crease-less Titanium Flex display improves durability.
3Z Fold 8 Ultra: Productivity Powerhouse
With its massive 8-inch display, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra targets professionals. The multitasking-optimized interface and slim profile stand out. Camera system features a 200MP main sensor and 3x optical zoom telephoto lens. 5,000mAh battery and Ceramic 3 protection enhance durability. Priced starting at $2,100, it's positioned as a premium productivity device. Notably lacks S Pen support, which might disappoint some Note series fans. The thinnest Fold model yet at just 4.1mm when unfolded.
4Z Flip 8: Stylish and Nostalgic
The Galaxy Z Flip 8 features a slimmer design than last year's model. Combines classic flip phone nostalgia with modern tech. 6.9-inch main display and 4.1-inch cover screen meet basic needs. Using apps on the cover screen can extend battery life. Camera system includes 50MP main and 12MP ultrawide sensors. 4,300mAh battery supports 25W charging. Available in pink, graphite, and mint color options. The most affordable model in the series, perfect for fashion-conscious users.
5Processor and Performance
All Galaxy Z 8 models feature the specially optimized Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset. Z Flip 8 also offers Exynos 2600 as an alternative in some regions. Standard 12GB RAM, expandable to 16GB on Fold models. Storage options range from 256GB to 1TB. IP48 rating provides basic dust and water resistance, though not fully waterproof. The unified chipset ensures consistent performance across all models, with slight thermal advantages in larger devices.
6Display Technologies
Fold models feature LTPO AMOLED displays with 1-120Hz adaptive refresh rates. Z Fold 8 Ultra's 8-inch inner display boasts 2,504x2,256 resolution. Z Flip 8's 6.9-inch main screen uses Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection. Titanium Flex technology minimizes visible crease across all models. Outer displays also feature high refresh rates for smoother interactions. Samsung's advanced panel technology delivers vibrant colors and deep blacks on all devices.
7Camera Comparison
Z Fold 8 and Z Flip 8 share a 50MP main camera, while Z Fold 8 Ultra features a groundbreaking 200MP sensor. Only the Ultra includes 3x optical zoom capability. All models have 10MP front cameras, with Folds featuring separate inner and outer display cameras. Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) is standard across the lineup. Low-light performance shows significant improvement on the Ultra model, especially in detailed shots.
8Which Model for Whom?
Z Fold 8 suits daily users wanting compact foldability. Z Fold 8 Ultra targets professionals needing maximum screen real estate. Z Flip 8 appeals to style-conscious users valuing nostalgia. Price/performance balance favors Z Fold 8, while Ultra delivers peak performance. Z Flip 8 wins in portability. Samsung's 7-year update promise makes all models long-term investments. Your choice depends on whether you prioritize productivity, portability, or price.
