Binance Repurchases Stolen Assets Following Massive $6.3 Billion Security Breach
Exchange initiates buybacks of ENA and RSR tokens to restore reserves after theft.
1Binance Initiates Asset Buyback
Following a massive $6.3 billion security breach, Binance has begun repurchasing stolen tokens to replenish its reserves. Onchain data confirms that Ethena transferred 128.63 million ENA tokens, valued at approximately $24 million, to Binance deposit addresses. This strategic move aims to address the significant liquidity gap caused by the recent unauthorized outflows.
2Ethena Token Transfer Details
Blockchain trackers identified that Ethena moved the ENA tokens from its Coinbase Prime Custody address in batches of 25.25 million. These transfers represent roughly 59% of the 217.5 million ENA tokens originally stolen from the exchange on October 29. The tokens were successfully routed to Binance to facilitate the ongoing recovery process.
3Scope of the Recovery Plan
Binance currently holds $5 billion of the $6.3 billion in stolen assets, covering about 80% of the total loss. The exchange is utilizing its Secure Asset Fund for Users and corporate treasury to acquire the remaining 20%. Co-CEOs Yi He and Richard Teng have committed to covering all losses for affected users.
4Reserve Protocol Market Impact
Beyond Ethena, the Reserve Protocol team confirmed that Binance is repurchasing 3.38 billion RSR tokens. Valued at approximately $4.6 million, these tokens are being acquired through professional market makers on the open market. The RSR token price saw a 6.4% increase over the last 24 hours, reflecting the impact of these buyback activities.
5Hacker Liquidation and Market Selloff
The attacker previously dumped 217.5 million ENA tokens, generating 70,480 ETH through seven distinct sales. This activity was part of a broader $158 million altcoin liquidation event that occurred on October 30. Binance is now actively working to counteract these market disruptions by sourcing the same assets through OTC and market channels.
6Leadership Reassurance and Strategy
Co-CEO Yi He has been actively communicating with the community to maintain trust during the recovery phase. She explicitly declined user offers for financial donations, insisting that such funds should be directed toward charitable causes instead. The leadership team maintains that the exchange possesses sufficient capital to fully cover the identified security losses.
7Proof of Reserves Deadline
Binance has scheduled a full proof of reserves report for November 2 to demonstrate that user balances are adequately backed. Reserve Protocol expects the RSR repurchase to be completed by the Monday deadline. This report serves as a critical milestone for the exchange to verify its solvency and restore confidence among its global user base.
8Phased Withdrawal Recovery Plan
The exchange plans to resume withdrawals in phases within 34 hours, pending rigorous security checks. This recovery plan follows the initial snapshot of reserves taken within 12 hours of the October 30 update. The upcoming report will clarify if the remaining $1.3 billion gap has been successfully closed by the exchange's treasury operations.
